Arsenal Secure Ezri Konsa in £50m-plus Deal

Arsenal have finally got their man.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Gunners have struck a deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a move worth £50m-plus, landing the versatile defender Mikel Arteta has been pushing for all summer.

Posting on X, Romano delivered his trademark confirmation: Arsenal have an agreement in place with Villa for Konsa, with a fee set at £50m plus add-ons and a long-term contract lined up for the England international. The 28-year-old is scheduled to undergo his medical within the next 48 hours before putting pen to paper at Arsenal.

The Athletic backed up the news, reporting a slightly higher initial figure of £51m plus add-ons and stating that Konsa’s medical is booked for Thursday.

For Arsenal, this is a statement signing. They are firmly in win-now mode, and Konsa arrives as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. He has been Aston Villa’s standout at the back for several seasons and enhanced his reputation on the biggest stage with England at the World Cup.

Arteta has been hunting a defender who can cover both centre-back and right-back, a need sharpened by injuries to William Saliba (back) and Jurrien Timber (groin). Konsa ticks both boxes. He brings experience, versatility and the kind of composure Arsenal want if they are to sustain a title push across four competitions.

A busy summer and a clear plan

Konsa becomes the latest piece in a carefully constructed window at the Emirates. Arsenal have already brought in Illan Meslier as goalkeeping cover, turned Piero Hincapie’s loan into a permanent deal, added Bruno Guimaraes to bolster the midfield, and signed Christos Tzolis as Leandro Trossard’s replacement on the left wing.

Another high-profile left winger is still on the agenda. If that deal gets done, Gabriel Martinelli is expected to be given the green light to move on. A more ruthless striker also remains on the club’s wishlist, but the defensive situation forced its way to the front of the queue in recent weeks.

Konsa was the “top target” – but not the first attempt

Romano has described Konsa as Arsenal’s “top target all summer”, yet the path to this deal was not entirely straightforward.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he revealed that Arsenal had first tried to prise Marc Pubill from Atletico Madrid. The London club explored a move in recent weeks, only to be firmly rebuffed.

“Atleti had no intention at all to negotiate or discuss,” Romano explained. With Atletico refusing to entertain talks, Pubill stays put in Madrid and Arsenal turned fully towards Konsa.

That pivot may prove decisive. Arsenal now add a proven Premier League defender, comfortable in multiple roles, at the very moment their back line needs shoring up. The fee is heavy, the expectation even heavier — but this is the kind of signing a serious title challenger makes.
