Arsenal Pursues Julián Álvarez Despite His Barcelona Dream

Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the player dreams of Barcelona.

The Premier League champions have tracked the Argentine all summer, pushing to bring him back to England. Álvarez, though, has been clear: his ideal move is to La Liga, and specifically to Barça. That has been the tension running underneath this saga for weeks.

Spain points to England

Spanish outlet Sport claims Álvarez’s future “will be decided in the coming hours” and that “all signs point to England,” with Atlético Madrid said to be actively steering the striker towards north London rather than a rival destination.

Atlético’s stance matters. Earlier this summer, the 26-year-old publicly stated that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid rejected by their city rivals. The door to the Bernabéu closed. The dream of Barcelona remained. The reality of Arsenal has crept in.

Mikel Arteta has already called Álvarez personally, trying to sell the project and the role waiting for him at the Emirates. For now, the feeling from the player’s side is that Barcelona is still the preferred outcome. Yet the noise from Spain suggests the momentum is shifting.

Alemany in London, Arsenal in the mix

Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London for talks over Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. That trip could prove decisive. Sport Witness report that Álvarez may also be on the agenda during Alemany’s visit, with Arsenal’s interest still very much alive.

Arsenal’s offer, according to those same reports, stands at “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres,” a package that would hand Álvarez the chance to double his salary at the Emirates and take on a central role under Arteta. That is the pitch: money, minutes, and responsibility in a title-chasing side.

The Gunners’ attacking jigsaw is complicated. Viktor Gyökeres is now being linked with Barcelona. Gabriel Jesus is also said to be on the Blaugrana shortlist. Arsenal could end up shaping Barça’s forward line even as they chase one of the Catalans’ own targets.

Inside London Colney, though, there is an acceptance of risk. FourFourTwo understands Arteta is prepared for the possibility of not adding another forward at all this summer if the right deal does not materialise.

A crowded market, few solutions

Around Álvarez, the market has twisted in several directions without landing on a clean solution for Arsenal.

Gabriel Martinelli has reportedly turned down an offer from Galatasaray, keeping one key wide option in place for Arteta. There is said to be interest in Victor Osimhen, but that would be a separate, hugely complex pursuit.

Other targets have already slipped away. Arsenal are not involved in the chase for Bradley Barcola. Moves for Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have gone nowhere: Vinícius chose to extend his contract in Madrid, while Rogers joined Chelsea in a British record transfer.

That leaves Álvarez as one of the few elite-level forwards still realistically in play.

Where Álvarez would fit

If Arsenal do get this over the line, the tactical options are obvious and enticing.

Álvarez could replace Martinelli on the left, drifting inside to link with Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka. He could also operate as a central striker, rotating with Havertz and offering a different profile at No.9. Much depends on who leaves London Colney in the coming weeks and how aggressively Arsenal trim their attacking unit.

For now, the equation is simple. Atlético want to sell. Barcelona want him. Álvarez dreams of the Camp Nou. Arsenal are on the phone, money on the table, a starring role waiting.

The window is closing. Someone will have to blink.
