Arsenal's Pre-Season Opener: Havertz and Young Talents Shine

Mikel Arteta stands on the brink of his first true glimpse of Arsenal’s new summer shape – and he looks ready to roll the dice.

After a low-key, behind-closed-doors win over MK Dons at the weekend, tonight’s meeting with Girona is the moment the curtain finally lifts for supporters. This is the first official pre-season outing in front of fans, the first chance to see how Arteta intends to stitch together a squad stretched by international duty and early injuries.

And it should bring a debut.

Havertz ready to step in

With several senior names still scattered across holiday resorts after deep World Cup runs with Spain and England, and Martin Odegaard yet to report back following Norway’s quarter-final exit, Arsenal’s creative burden needs a new carrier. Kai Havertz is the obvious candidate.

The German has been working alone at Bayer Leverkusen’s facilities, keeping his fitness ticking over, and arrives in north London primed rather than rusty. Arteta is expected to reward that work with an immediate start against Girona, using this game to test his movement and understanding within a reshuffled attack.

He will not walk into a settled side. This is a squad in flux, some players only just back in the building, others still nursing summer scars.

Saliba out, Mosquera steps forward

At the back, William Saliba’s absence looms large. A back injury has ruled him out for what the club describes as an “extended period”, ripping a key pillar from Arteta’s defensive structure before a competitive ball has been kicked.

The response is already taking shape. Cristhian Mosquera, who has quietly impressed behind the scenes, is set for another chance to prove he can shoulder senior responsibility at centre-back. These are the nights that decide whether a young defender becomes a trusted option or simply a name on a team sheet in July.

With Saliba sidelined and the senior internationals away, Mosquera’s audition suddenly matters.

White closing in, Timber waits

There is better news on the flanks. Ben White, whose knee injury cut short his campaign last season, is edging back towards full involvement. He sat out the MK Dons friendly but has trained consistently over the past couple of weeks and could finally bank his first minutes since that setback.

For Arteta, seeing White back in the right-back role would be a significant step towards rebuilding the familiar defensive framework that underpinned last year’s progress.

Jurrien Timber, though, must wait. The Dutchman underwent minor groin surgery over the summer and remains on a longer road to recovery. Arsenal will not rush him, not with the season stretching ahead and memories of last year’s injury disruption still fresh.

Young blood and returning Brazilians

Further up the pitch, the picture is mixed. Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are due to link up with the squad ahead of the Girona clash, but expectations around their involvement are deliberately modest. Limited training time means any appearance is likely to be brief, more about reintroducing rhythm than making statements.

That opens the door for youth.

Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri both have reason to circle this fixture in red. Pre-season is where reputations accelerate, where a sharp 30 minutes can alter a manager’s plans for the entire autumn. With spaces to fill and minutes to manage, Arteta has every incentive to throw them in and see who swims.

The same applies to Mosquera at the back. With Saliba unavailable and Timber still recovering, the pathway is clear. Now it is about seizing it.

The backdrop is familiar: a squad not yet whole, fitness levels uneven, key men missing. Yet this is exactly the kind of night Arteta likes – a chance to experiment, to test character, to discover who is ready earlier than expected.

Girona will not define Arsenal’s season. But for Havertz, Mosquera, Nwaneri and the rest, it could quietly shape their place in it.
