Arsenal's New Winger Christos Tzolis Impresses Ahead of Champions League

Arsenal’s new wide man Christos Tzolis has barely kicked a ball in the Champions League for his club, yet his name is already echoing around Europe’s elite circles.

Signed from Club Brugge in July for £34m on a long-term deal, the 24-year-old Greece international has hit the ground sprinting in north London, powering the Premier League champions to four wins from four ahead of their Champions League opener against Napoli.

This was no opportunistic punt. Mikel Arteta moved for Tzolis after green-lighting the exit of Leandro Trossard and putting Gabriel Martinelli up for sale, a reshaping of his forward line that raised eyebrows when it was first floated. Inside Arsenal, though, they were convinced. They believed they were getting a winger who could sharpen the champions rather than simply pad out the squad.

Bart Verhaeghe, the Club Brugge president, revealed just how effusive the praise was.

“At the Champions League draw, I saw people from Arsenal and they showed a tremendous amount of respect,” Verhaeghe told Het Belang van Limburg. “’What a player you’ve delivered,’ they told me. They said he has an excellent attitude, is the best in the physical tests and is a great guy, too.”

The compliments did not stop there. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Verhaeghe repeated the same message he had heard from the English champions.

“Arsenal said ‘what a player’ when they approached me after the draw,” he explained. “Christos had come out on top in all the tests. That’s what we do here: deliver a ready-made product. Because we know what those top teams are looking for. We prepare our players for that kind of football.”

For Brugge, Tzolis has become a case study. Proof that their methods work.

“Back then, people laughed at our holistic approach to nutrition, sleep, special glasses… Today, it’s all standard practice. We were the innovators from day one, and we’ll keep innovating.

“Today, we’re selling players to Arsenal and Inter Milan, two teams that have reached the Champions League final in the last two years. And at the same time, we’re recruiting directly from the Premier League, from a club like West Ham. Ten years ago, that was unthinkable.”

Dominating the data at London Colney

Inside Arsenal’s training base, the numbers back up the hype. Tzolis has been tearing through the physical testing, leaving established names trailing.

Ben White lifted the lid on what those early days looked like.

“Christos has been amazing,” the England defender said last month. “He came in, did all the testing, and beat everyone.

“So he is fitting in really well and everyone is really happy for him to be here.”

That echoes the belief of sporting director Andrea Berta, who championed the move and publicly set a high bar for the Greek winger after sealing the transfer. Berta said Tzolis would “raise the technical level of our squad” and bring a “strong mentality to our team”. So far, the player is matching that billing.

The impact has not just been internal. Four straight league wins, a new attacking angle from the flank, and a player who looks like he has been in Arteta’s system for years rather than weeks have all pushed his name into the wider conversation.

‘Signing of the season’ talk already

On the outside, the plaudits are starting to stack up. Rio Ferdinand has seen enough to stick his neck out.

“Who is the best signing of the transfer window? From what I’ve seen so far, I’m going to go for Tzolis,” the former Manchester United defender said on his YouTube channel.

“For the price you got him for, £35m, from what I’ve seen, jinky little winger, great vision, making good decisions in the final third.

“I think, great bit of business done by the recruitment team at Arsenal. I’m going to go early, I’m going to say he’s going to be my signing of the season, as in terms of value, and in terms of what he does.”

It is a bold shout this early in the campaign, but it captures the mood around the Emirates. Arsenal bet heavily on a wide reshuffle. They trusted their data, their scouting, and their conviction that Tzolis was ready-made for a title-chasing side.

Now comes the real examination. The Premier League champions are about to step back under the Champions League spotlight, starting against Napoli.
