Arsenal's Injury Updates Ahead of Chelsea Derby
Mikel Arteta will send Arsenal into Sunday’s London derby with Chelsea with his squad walking a tightrope between early-season momentum and lingering fitness doubts – but with one major defensive boost finally in sight.
Mosquera scare played down
Cristhian Mosquera’s withdrawal in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday raised alarms, the defender coming off for Ezri Konsa after feeling his hamstring. Arteta moved quickly to cool the concern.
“He was more a precaution than anything else,” the Arsenal manager said ahead of the Emirates Stadium showdown. “We’ll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels.”
The Spaniard is still being assessed and, tellingly, was not spotted in Thursday’s training images from London Colney. Arsenal will not gamble with him, but the message from Arteta was clear: this is not viewed as a serious setback.
Timber edging towards long-awaited return
The more uplifting news for Arsenal comes at full-back. Jurrien Timber, who has not played a single minute this season after a minor groin procedure in the summer, is finally edging back into the frame.
He was photographed taking part in light work on the grass on Thursday, and Arteta revealed the Dutchman is now pushing to be involved sooner rather than later.
“Yeah, he’s in really good condition at the moment,” Arteta said. “He’s been now a few weeks on the pitch and he’s been training with us now, so he’s in a good place.”
An “outside chance” of making the squad this weekend is how it feels: not a guarantee, but no longer a distant prospect. For a side juggling domestic and European demands, even the hint of Timber’s return changes the complexion of their defensive options.
Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock
One player Arsenal may have to do without against Chelsea is Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian took another knock in the Villa win and, like Mosquera, missed Thursday’s visible training session.
“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he’s been assessed,” Arteta explained. “Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training.”
Guimaraes already sat out the opening 3-0 victory over Coventry City after picking up a problem in the Community Shield win over Manchester City. Arsenal have managed without him once this season; doing so again, in a derby between two unbeaten sides, would be a very different test.
Saliba named, and a quiet hint of optimism
Behind all of this sits the longer, more delicate story: William Saliba’s recovery. The centre-back has been dealing with a serious back issue suffered at the World Cup, a problem that demands patience rather than bold timelines.
Arsenal have at least given themselves a chance. Saliba has been included in both the 25-man Premier League squad and the Champions League list, a clear sign the club believe he can feature before the January resubmission.
“Yes, we don’t really know the amount of weeks he’s going to be out because it’s about a healing process in the beginning, it’s a bit different,” Arteta said when asked for an update. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”
No promises. But the door is open.
Derby of perfect starts
Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates as two of only four Premier League teams to have won both of their opening fixtures. Early days, yes, but a perfect record in this league is hard to ignore, even in August.
Recent history leans Arsenal’s way. The sides met four times across all competitions last season; the Gunners won three and drew the other, establishing a clear edge in this particular rivalry.
Now comes the next chapter: two flawless starts, one London stage, and an Arsenal side trying to balance caution in the treatment room with aggression on the pitch. Timber edging closer, Saliba on the horizon, key men being patched up and pushed through assessments.
If this is what Arsenal look like while still waiting for their defence to be whole, what happens when everyone is finally fit?
