Arsenal Faces Early Injury Concerns Ahead of Premier League Opener

Arsenal’s title defence has barely begun and already the nerves have kicked in.

Mikel Arteta revealed on Thursday that new signing Bruno Guimaraes is a major doubt for Friday night’s Premier League opener against Coventry, casting an early shadow over the champions’ preparations.

The Brazilian midfielder, signed to add steel and craft to the heart of Arsenal’s side, made his competitive debut in Sunday’s 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City. It didn’t last the full distance. A knock forced him off and, four days on, his manager still couldn’t give the green light.

“Let’s see how he is. He’s evolving really well, but let’s see for tomorrow,” Arteta said, refusing to overpromise on the 28-year-old’s chances.

Saka and Rice ready to go

If Guimaraes is touch-and-go, the news on Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice landed far more cleanly.

Both England internationals were handed extended holidays after their deep run at the 2026 World Cup and only recently rejoined the squad at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. Any fears of rust or fatigue were quickly brushed aside by Arteta.

“Yes, they’re ready to be involved, yes,” he confirmed, a short, sharp boost ahead of the curtain-raiser.

Their availability transforms the mood. Saka and Rice drove England’s summer surge on the international stage, just months after helping Arsenal finally end a wait of more than 20 years for the Premier League trophy. Dropping straight back into club colours, they instantly strengthen a midfield that may have to cope without its marquee new arrival on opening night.

Defensive injuries bite hard

The optimism in midfield contrasts sharply with the situation at the back.

Jurrien Timber remains sidelined after suffering a groin injury on the eve of the World Cup. He stays on the long-term absentee list alongside William Saliba, whose absence has already stretched Arteta’s options to breaking point.

Asked for a fresh timeline on Timber, Arteta was blunt.

“No, I said in the next few weeks. He’s not training with the group yet.”

That gap in the squad has dragged Arsenal back into the market. With the season about to kick off, the club have reportedly struck a £51 million agreement with Aston Villa for Ezri Konsa, a move aimed squarely at shoring up a fragile defensive unit.

Arteta, as usual, dodged specifics on the England defender’s name but did not hide the scale of the club’s push.

“Well, we are really active in the market. I think I mentioned that a few days ago,” he said. “The ambition is to improve the squad.

“We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that’s clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we’re ready, we’ll announce something.”

So Arsenal head into the new campaign in a familiar Premier League state: champions, ambitious, dangerous going forward — and already walking a tightrope at the back. How quickly they solve that problem may decide whether last season was the start of an era, or a glorious one-off.
