Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season has hit an early snag, with a London derby looming and two big names missing from the picture.

Guimaraes absence raises derby doubts

At London Colney on Thursday, Arsenal opened the doors to training. Two players stayed firmly behind them. There was no sign of £75 million summer signing Bruno Guimaraes, and no sign of defender Cristhian Mosquera.

For a squad preparing to face an unbeaten Chelsea side led by Xabi Alonso, that is not a small detail.

Guimaraes has been nursing a persistent groin problem since his high-profile switch from Newcastle United. It already cost him a place in Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, and even his return was cautious: just a 19‑minute cameo off the bench in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday.

Mikel Arteta has treated his new midfield anchor like a prized asset under glass. Minutes have been managed, workloads trimmed, every step framed by the knowledge that Arsenal have depth in midfield and a long season ahead. But this is Chelsea at the Emirates, with both sides perfect after two games. It is exactly the sort of fixture where a player of Guimaraes’ range and control reshapes a game plan.

If he misses out, Arsenal lose more than a name on the teamsheet. They lose a key part of the tactical fluidity Arteta has tried to build around him.

Mosquera scare complicates the back line

Mosquera’s situation carries a different kind of worry.

The 22-year-old Spaniard was forced off late in the win at Villa Park, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta played it down, insisting it was precaution rather than panic.

“He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri,” the Arsenal manager said after the game.

Those words sounded reassuring on Monday night. His absence from Thursday’s open session tells a slightly sharper story. If Mosquera is not deemed fit for Sunday, the door swings open for Konsa to step in from the start and make his full home debut at the Emirates.

Konsa, signed from Aston Villa for £51 million last month, is the obvious replacement. He knows the league, he knows the tempo, and he has already been trusted to close out a tight away win. Now he may be asked to anchor a defence from the first whistle in one of the season’s early marquee fixtures.

Defensive depth under early strain

The concerns do not stop there. Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend as he continues his own battle for full fitness, while William Saliba is already sidelined for an extended spell after an injury that worsened around the World Cup period.

Arteta built this squad to withstand exactly this kind of strain, but the test has arrived quickly. Centre-back options are thinning. The margin for error against a free-scoring Chelsea narrows with every absentee.

Both teams arrive at the derby with flawless records. Arsenal eased past Coventry City 3-0 on the opening weekend, then dug in to edge Aston Villa 1-0. Chelsea, more chaotic but just as effective, have come through two goal-laden contests: a 3-2 win over Fulham and a 4-3 thriller against Brighton.

Goals, then, are almost guaranteed. What remains to be seen is whether Arsenal’s reshuffled spine – potentially without their £75 million midfielder and a first-choice defender – can hold its nerve when Chelsea come to town.
