Arsenal vs Chelsea: Arteta's Experience for Premier League Clash
Mikel Arteta stands on the brink of Arsenal’s first major examination of the Premier League season, and he looks ready to lean on experience for Chelsea’s visit to the Emirates on Sunday.
Two games in, two wins each. Chelsea’s attack is already humming; Arsenal have yet to concede. It has the feel of a classic clash of styles in north London: firepower against discipline, swagger against structure.
Defence: Konsa waiting in the wings
Cristhian Mosquera’s early withdrawal at Aston Villa on Monday was precautionary rather than alarming, but it may still open the door to a change at the back.
Arteta has Ezri Konsa in reserve, and this could be the moment to hand him a full debut at centre-back alongside Gabriel. A settled, more seasoned partnership would give Arsenal extra calm against a Chelsea front line that has started the campaign sharply.
With Riccardo Calafiori locked in at left-back and Ben White a mainstay on the right, the back four could take on a more rugged look for what already feels like a statement fixture.
Midfield riches and a Bruno dilemma
If Villa Park showed anything, it was Arsenal’s depth in midfield.
Bruno Guimaraes came off the bench and immediately raised the tempo, knitting play together and driving the team forward in his brief cameo. That impact has given Arteta a genuine selection call: keep faith with youth, or unleash one of his most polished midfielders from the first whistle against a major rival.
Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard are effectively untouchable. They form the spine of this side and are not expected to drop out. That leaves Myles Lewis-Skelly as the likely casualty if Guimaraes is promoted to the starting XI.
It would be harsh on the youngster, but these are the margins when the stakes rise and the opposition wears Chelsea blue.
Attack: Tzolis under pressure, Eze knocking
The front line poses its own questions.
Christos Tzolis struggled to impose himself against Villa, and the game seemed to shift once Eberechi Eze entered at half-time. Eze brought incision and craft, and with Chelsea on the horizon, he has made a strong case to start.
Arteta, though, often rewards trust and structure. Dropping Tzolis after one difficult outing would be a bold move, even if Eze’s cameo sharpened Arsenal’s edge.
Up top, the picture looks clearer. Viktor Gyokeres has yet to play a single Premier League minute this season and is not expected to dislodge Kai Havertz for this one. Arteta consistently leans on the German in the biggest games, valuing his movement, link play and knack for turning tense occasions in Arsenal’s favour.
On the right, Bukayo Saka has opened the season in familiar fashion: direct, dangerous, relentless. He heads into Sunday chasing a goal in a third straight league match, and his duel with Chelsea’s left side could define the afternoon.
Predicted Arsenal XI vs Chelsea
Arteta is expected to stick with his trusted 4-2-3-1, with only a couple of calculated tweaks:
Raya; White, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Guimaraes; Saka, Odegaard, Tzolis; Havertz
Injured: Timber, Saliba
Kick-off is at 4:30pm BST on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the Emirates Stadium, where attack meets defence and Arsenal’s early-season composure faces its sternest test yet.
