Arsenal's Champions League Squad Boost with Saliba's Inclusion

Arsenal’s Champions League plans have received a timely lift, with William Saliba named in the club’s 22-man squad for this season’s European campaign.

The French defender has yet to play a minute this term after a back problem resurfaced, but his inclusion signals growing optimism inside the club that he will feature at some stage in the league phase. For a fanbase still nursing scars from May’s final defeat, it is a rare piece of good news.

Last season ended in heartbreak. Arsenal were taken all the way to penalties by Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, only to fall short in the shootout. Saliba started that night alongside Gabriel, whose missed spot-kick sealed the trophy for the Ligue 1 champions and left Mikel Arteta’s side empty-handed.

Saliba later revealed during the World Cup that he had pushed through significant pain in Arsenal’s pursuit of a first Premier League title in 22 years. He then carried that burden into Europe, anchoring a run that went all the way to the Champions League final. The bill for that effort has arrived in the form of his current lay-off.

There is still no firm date for his return. Arsenal are not putting a timeline on it. Yet his presence on the squad list changes the mood. It hints at a belief that he will be available when the competition begins to tighten.

Arsenal have not stood still while he recovers. The club moved decisively in the summer window, paying £51 million to bring Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa and strengthen the core of the defence. Cristhian Mosquera has also stepped up impressively, filling the void in the No2’s absence and easing some of the immediate pressure on the back line.

The European squad underlines the scale of the rebuild around that defensive unit. New signings Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Ilan Meslier and Konsa all make the cut, giving Arteta fresh options across the pitch. Jurrien Timber is also included, despite his own stop-start recovery from a persistent groin problem that has stalled his momentum since joining the club.

Arsenal know what it took to reach last season’s final. The question now is whether this reshaped, reinforced squad — with Saliba waiting in the wings — can go one step further.
