Arsenal’s £55m Bid for Bruno Guimarães Rejected by Newcastle
Arsenal have tested Newcastle United’s resolve for Bruno Guimarães with a £55 million offer – and been sent away empty-handed.
Sources have told ESPN Brasil that Newcastle rejected the bid outright, making it clear they have no intention of losing their midfield leader this summer. The stance is firm: Guimarães is not for sale.
That has not stopped Arsenal from pushing at the door. The Premier League champions have already held early talks with the Brazilian’s representatives and come away believing a deal is not impossible. Encouragement, but no breakthrough yet.
Newcastle, though, are moving on a different track. With two years left on Guimarães’ current deal, they are trying to lock him into a new contract and build the next phase of their project around him. Since arriving from Lyon in 2022, he has passed 150 appearances for the club and become the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s side, on and off the ball.
The timing adds extra tension. Newcastle are under pressure to keep what remains of their core together after losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and seeing several other players draw serious interest from across Europe. Letting another star go now would send a brutal message about where the project is heading.
Arsenal, fresh from ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, are moving aggressively to deepen a squad that now has a target on its back. Midfield is a priority area, but not the only one, as Mikel Arteta looks for more control, more depth, more variety for a season that will stretch them on multiple fronts.
Guimarães sits high on that list. So does Sandro Tonali. Arsenal are monitoring the Italian’s situation at Newcastle, even as Tottenham take a more active role in trying to prise him away and Manchester City keep a close eye on developments. It is a crowded marketplace, with three heavyweight clubs circling the same talent pool.
The Gunners’ recruitment net spreads further. They are tracking Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, a player whose versatility and energy have drawn admiring glances from north London. ESPN also reported back in January that Arsenal hold an interest in Julián Álvarez at Atletico Madrid, another sign of their determination to add goals and creativity around their established stars.
For now, though, the centre of gravity in this story remains Tyneside. Newcastle have made their position clear. Arsenal have made their move. The question is whether a second bid – and a bigger number – will be enough to crack a club that knows exactly what Bruno Guimarães means to its future.
