Andre Onana Returns to Trabzonspor on Loan for 2026-27

Andre Onana is heading back to familiar ground. Trabzonspor have confirmed the Manchester United goalkeeper has rejoined the Turkish club on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign, again without an option to buy. His United deal still runs until June 2028, so this is a temporary escape, not a permanent goodbye.

Onana’s Premier League appeal

Even with his future parked in Turkey for another year, Andre Onana’s name refuses to leave Premier League conversations.

Speaking to Premier Bet, former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune underlined just how highly he rates the Cameroonian’s distribution, insisting that several English clubs would jump at the chance to build from the back with him.

"Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said. "You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point."

That, in a sentence, is the Onana debate. Mistakes have been magnified, but his ability with the ball at his feet remains elite.

"When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it," Fortune continued. "He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding."

For now, that rebuild of confidence will happen in the pressure cooker of the Turkish Super Lig, not under the glare of Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge. But the skill set that once made him one of Europe’s most coveted modern goalkeepers clearly still has admirers in England.

Chelsea’s new leaders – and a United regret

Fortune didn’t stop at Onana. The former South Africa international also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, particularly the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson under Xabi Alonso.

His verdict came with a tinge of regret from a Manchester United perspective.

"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," Fortune admitted to Premier Bet. "By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid."

That line cuts to the heart of Chelsea’s recent rebuild. Talent has never been the issue at Stamford Bridge. Personality has. Alonso, shaped by his time in one of the most demanding dressing rooms in world football, has clearly moved to address that.

"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck," Fortune added. "They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."

So while Onana searches for rhythm again in Trabzon, Chelsea lean on Welbeck and Henderson to restore order and standards in a restless squad.
