Álvarez Rejects Man City Return Amid Barcelona Aspirations

Julián Álvarez has shut down the idea of a sensational return to Etihad Stadium before it ever got off the ground.

According to Cadena SER, Manchester City sounded out Atlético Madrid over bringing their former striker back, only to be met with a flat refusal from the Argentine. The Premier League champions never even reached the stage of lodging a formal offer; Álvarez made it clear he has no intention of returning to Manchester.

That hard line comes in the middle of the most combustible transfer saga of the summer. Álvarez is locked in a stand-off with Atlético, wanted desperately by Arsenal, and yet fixated on only one destination.

Arsenal’s “dream signing” keeps saying no

Arsenal have made Álvarez their priority up front, the “dream” No 9 for Mikel Arteta’s project. They have tested the waters multiple times. Each time, the answer has been the same: no.

The London club have been told repeatedly that the 26‑year‑old does not want to move to England. Not to Manchester. Not to north London. Not anywhere in the Premier League.

His eyes are on Barcelona.

Barcelona or nothing

Álvarez is pushing for a move to Camp Nou and has done so all summer. Barcelona already tried to prise him away with a €100 million (£86m) bid earlier in the window and came up short.

Club president Joan Laporta did little to cool the noise this week. He openly confirmed Barça’s interest and said it was “common knowledge” that Álvarez wants to join them. The message from the player’s camp has been consistent: Spain suits him, Barcelona is the goal.

But that is where the dream crashes into reality.

Atlético have drawn a red line. The Madrid club have told all parties there is “zero per cent chance” they will sell their star striker to a direct La Liga rival. No negotiation, no compromise, no back door.

So while Barcelona publicly keep the flame burning, Atlético privately keep the door bolted.

Personal reasons keep England off the table

Álvarez’s resistance to a Premier League return is not rooted in football. Reports in Spain suggest his stance is driven by personal and family considerations rather than concerns over the game itself.

He is said to be acutely aware of UK visa regulations that would make it far harder for his family to visit him regularly. In Spain, those hurdles do not exist in the same way. For a player at the peak of his career, that distinction has become decisive.

It marks a clear shift from his first spell in England. When City plucked him from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, he embraced the challenge. Across 103 appearances he scored 36 goals, played a key role in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble, and looked settled enough before leaving for Atlético in an £82m move two summers ago.

Now, the same country where he lifted the Champions League and Premier League has become a no-go zone in his mind.

Trapped between a club and a conviction

Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that, as things stand, Arsenal are his only realistic escape route from Atlético. City have been rebuffed. Barcelona are blocked. The Gunners remain the one club with both the money and the will to do a deal.

Still he refuses to bend. He wants to stay in Spain. He wants Barcelona.

That leaves him in a bind: a forward determined not to go back to England, employed by a club determined not to sell him to Barça.

For now, the saga is frozen. City have been turned away. Atlético will not pick up the phone to Barcelona. Arsenal wait, but without encouragement from the player, their pursuit has no traction.

The window ticks down. Álvarez must choose: rebuild bridges in Madrid and commit to Simeone’s project, or cling to a Barcelona dream that his own club insists will not happen.
