Alonso Acknowledges Caicedo Error After Chelsea's Loss to Arsenal

Chelsea walked off the pitch against Arsenal with a 2-1 defeat, a sore sense of what might have been, and one clear admission from their manager: he got it wrong with Moisés Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian midfielder, so central to Chelsea’s plans, was nowhere to be seen for the London derby on Sunday. His absence loomed large over a tight, high‑stakes game at Stamford Bridge, and afterwards Alonso did not hide from his part in it.

Risk backfires in Brighton comeback

Caicedo’s season has never really got going. He missed the Premier League opener against Fulham, then sat out the League Cup win over Luton Town. Chelsea finally pushed him back into action in that wild, breathless victory over Brighton.

It backfired.

Sent on in the 68th minute for Pedro Neto, Caicedo lasted only 14 minutes. He hobbled off, clearly in discomfort, and Alonso had to turn to summer signing Valentin Barco to see out the game. That brief, aborted return ended any hope of Caicedo featuring against Arsenal.

Speaking after the loss, Alonso admitted Chelsea had gambled too soon on their midfielder’s fitness.

“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” he said, as quoted by Metro. “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

The message was blunt: Chelsea rushed him. They won’t do it twice.

No excuses, despite key absences

Caicedo’s injury, coupled with other absentees such as Levi Colwill, would have given Alonso an easy alibi after a tight defeat to a major rival. He refused to take it.

“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing,” he said. “I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have.

“For sure all the managers need to deal with injuries, with suspensions. To have all the players available for all the games is impossible. But we need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team.”

The balance was clear: no public blame, no excuses, but a firm acknowledgement of how important those two are to Chelsea’s ceiling.

Caution ahead of Leeds test

There is no time for Chelsea to dwell on Arsenal. The schedule drags them straight back into knockout football, with Leeds United visiting in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Caicedo’s status for that tie is now the next major question. Alonso has already signalled a more cautious approach, hinting that Chelsea will not risk another setback for the sake of one cup tie.

The temptation will be there. So will the memory of Brighton.
