Alexis Mac Allister is back at Liverpool’s training ground, but not quite as Anfield remembers him.

The midfielder reported for pre-season with a sharply altered appearance, the marks of a recent hair transplant still visible on his scalp after a procedure carried out during his post-World Cup holiday.

A new look for a World Cup winner

Supporters first clocked the change back in March when Mac Allister appeared with a shaved head and tight buzz cut for the first time in his career. It looked drastic then. It makes more sense now.

During the summer break, the Argentina international was photographed at an airport signing autographs, a clear scar on his head consistent with a recent transplant. The 27-year-old had already hinted this was coming, speaking openly earlier in the year about a possible hair transformation once his World Cup commitments were out of the way.

“We’ll see if we can plant a bit more after the World Cup. Right now, time is a bit of a constraint,” he said in March. “But I’m really happy, I feel like I’m better off than before. Let’s see if there’s a little sponsorship deal.”

He’s followed through. In the latest images from Liverpool’s training base, the work is there for all to see: short hair, visible marks on the scalp, and a player clearly comfortable enough with the change to get straight back into preparations for the new campaign.

Fan concern over heading – and timing

Not everyone is relaxed about it.

With the Premier League season less than a month away, some Liverpool fans have voiced concern about whether their central midfielder will be able to head the ball freely while his scalp heals.

“Great, our center mid can’t head a ball for 2 months and the season starts in 24 days,” one supporter complained on social media.

Another added: “Nice so he can’t head the ball for the next few months which was one of the only things he still had going for him.”

The reaction underlines the tension around Liverpool’s build-up to the new season. After a bruising league campaign that ended with a fifth-place finish, every detail is being scrutinised – even a player’s hairstyle and medical procedures.

From Anfield frustration to World Cup heartbreak

Mac Allister’s club season closed in disappointment as Liverpool missed out on the top four. His focus then flipped quickly to international duty, joining Argentina for their World Cup title defence in North America.

There, his role was anything but cosmetic.

The 27-year-old featured prominently throughout the tournament, helping steer Argentina to a series of standout wins, including a semifinal victory over England that lit up the knockout stages. He was part of a side that looked capable of going all the way again.

Spain stopped them. A tight, tense final was settled in extra time, Argentina losing 1-0 and surrendering their crown. No trophy, but no doubt about Mac Allister’s importance to his national team.

Contract questions and transfer noise

Back at Liverpool, the conversation is less about medals and more about what comes next.

Mac Allister has two years left on his current deal, and so far there have been no talks over an extension. That gap has inevitably fed speculation over his future, with the midfielder linked to Real Madrid and, more surprisingly, to Manchester City.

At this stage, a move to City is not one Liverpool are thought to be entertaining. The idea of strengthening a direct domestic rival with a key midfielder would cut against the club’s usual stance.

So he trains on, under the Liverpool badge, with a new look and familiar questions. His hairline has been reshaped. The bigger issue now is whether his next season at Anfield will do the same for his career.
