Bournemouth first put fresh terms on the table in March, confident at the time that they could persuade the former Bristol City midfielder to commit his future. That optimism has faded. Talks have slowed, Scott has no intention of signing, and Chelsea have sensed their moment.

The pressure has cranked up in recent weeks as Chelsea accelerate their interest, aware that other heavyweights are circling. Arsenal and Manchester City have both been credited with an eye on Scott, but neither has yet turned that admiration into a formal bid for the England international.

Scott’s stock has risen sharply over the past year. He missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad but was still called in to train with the senior group before the tournament began, a clear sign of how he is viewed inside the national setup. The need in midfield at Stamford Bridge is obvious. Enzo Fernandez has made clear his desire to leave, even as Chelsea place a £120m price tag on the Argentine. Head coach Alonso has publicly said he wants to keep the 25-year-old, but with Real Madrid ruling out a move for the former Benfica man, the market around him remains uncertain.
