Ajax Sign Yves Bissouma on Long-Term Deal

Ajax have ended Yves Bissouma’s spell in limbo, confirming the Mali international on a long-term deal that runs until June 30, 2027. The contract takes effect immediately, handing the 28-year-old a fresh stage at the Johan Cruijff ArenA after a bruising end to his Premier League stay.

The former Tottenham and Brighton midfielder arrives in Amsterdam with a point to prove. His final season in North London brought just 11 appearances, a stark drop for a player once viewed as one of the most dynamic holding midfielders in England. Questions over reliability lingered as disciplinary problems mounted, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide.

That baggage follows him. So does the talent. Ajax are betting that the latter wins out.

Bissouma himself cut a determined figure as he spoke about the move. “I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, clearly relishing the chance to reset his career at one of the continent’s most storied institutions.

This was no last-minute scramble. Asked whether the transfer came as a surprise, Bissouma revealed the groundwork had been laid well in advance. “Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”

The club’s recruitment team has targeted greater physicality and experience in midfield, and Bissouma fits that brief. A proven ball-winner with European and Premier League pedigree, he is expected to add bite and balance to a side that continues to lean heavily on emerging talent.

Bissouma made his own ambitions clear. “I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he declared, framing the move as a launchpad rather than a safety net.

He also spoke about embracing responsibility in a dressing room famed for its conveyor belt of youth. “I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added, positioning himself as both enforcer and mentor.

Inside the club, the transfer has been viewed as a carefully timed opportunity. Technical Director Jordi Cruijff lifted the lid on the pursuit, confirming Ajax had tracked Bissouma’s situation for months and moved once it became clear he would be available on a free.

“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
