Ajax and Owen Wijndal Part Ways: Contract Terminated

Ajax have terminated the contract of Owen Wijndal with immediate effect, bringing a swift end to a spell in Amsterdam that never fully lived up to its promise.

The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a long-term solution on the flank, had slipped completely out of the picture in recent weeks. With no realistic prospect of minutes and two new signings ahead of him, club and player agreed to part ways, Voetbal International reports. His next destination is still unknown.

Wijndal’s deal at the Johan Cruijff ArenA was originally set to run until mid-2027. By tearing it up now, Ajax clear space in their wage bill and confirm, in hard terms, the reset already visible in their squad planning.

Left-Back Reset

That reset has been most obvious at left-back. This summer Ajax brought in Caio Henrique and 19-year-old Spaniard Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly moved ahead of Wijndal in the hierarchy, and last weekend underlined how far the former AZ captain had fallen.

In the 0-4 win over Telstar, Torrents came off the bench to make his mark. Wijndal did not move. He stayed seated for the full 90 minutes, a senior international frozen out while a teenager leapfrogged him in real time.

The writing had been on the wall for weeks. Both sides entered talks looking for a way out of the stalemate. That solution has now arrived: contract terminated, locker cleared, handshakes exchanged. Wijndal said his goodbyes to team-mates on Wednesday.

Ajax had brought him in from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, a significant outlay for a player expected to lock down the left flank for years. Instead, his Amsterdam story stuttered. The 2023/24 season was spent on loan at Royal Antwerp FC, a clear signal that his status at Ajax had already weakened.

Even so, his numbers in red and white were not negligible. The Zaandam-born defender made 77 official appearances for the club, contributing 3 goals and 7 assists. There were flashes of the attacking full-back Ajax thought they had signed, but never a sustained run that made the position unquestionably his.

Now, with Ajax turning to Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents, Wijndal steps into the market as a free agent at 26, carrying experience, a sizeable transfer fee in his past, and a point to prove. The question is simple: who will gamble on rebooting a career that once looked built for the top?
