Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Stay at Chelsea

Xabi Alonso has drawn a firm line in the sand over Enzo Fernandez – and he did it with barely a flicker of doubt.

Speaking before Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, the head coach shut down the noise around his midfielder’s future, insisting the Argentina international is going nowhere this summer.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” Alonso said, cutting straight through weeks of speculation.

Chelsea shut the door on Man City interest

Manchester City have been circling, eyeing Fernandez as a potential reinforcement in midfield. The 25-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, his name a constant presence in the late-summer rumour mill.

But the window for any serious approach has effectively closed. Chelsea informed Fernandez’s camp that he is not for sale this summer, and the 14 August deadline for a formal bid came and went without an offer arriving.

City’s interest has not disappeared, yet Chelsea’s stance is clear: Fernandez stays.

Alonso backs Fernandez’s attitude

If there were any doubts about where the player stands in all this, Alonso moved quickly to address them. The Spaniard highlighted Fernandez’s application and behaviour since returning to the squad.

“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well,” Alonso said. “I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want.”

Those are not the words of a coach preparing to lose a key midfielder. They are the words of a manager planning around him.

Mixed pre-season, clear message

Fernandez’s relationship with sections of the Chelsea support has been tested in pre-season, with the midfielder receiving a mixed reception at times. The club responded in their own way.

During a friendly win over Real Sociedad, Chelsea handed Fernandez the captain’s armband. It was a small gesture, but a loud one: the club still see him as central, trusted, and influential.

With the transfer window closing on 1 September, talk over his future will rumble on outside the club. Inside Cobham, though, the picture is far simpler.
