Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez's Commitment to Chelsea

Xabi Alonso insists Enzo Fernandez is going nowhere – at least for now.

The Chelsea head coach says the Argentina midfielder has shown a “really good attitude” since returning to the squad, despite ongoing noise around his future and serious interest from Manchester City.

Deadline passes, door shuts

Back in late May, Chelsea reached an understanding with Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore: if a club put £120m on the table, the 25-year-old could leave. But there was a catch. Any move had to be agreed by 14 August.

That date came and went last Friday. No formal bids. No last‑minute scramble.

With the deadline missed, Chelsea have now informed Fernandez’s camp that he is not for sale in this window. The stance is clear. The price tag, for now, is irrelevant.

City, though, have not been easily discouraged. Managed by Enzo Maresca, the man who previously worked with Fernandez at Stamford Bridge, the Premier League champions remain keen and still believe Chelsea would be open to doing business.

Chelsea are adamant they are not.

Alonso backs his midfielder

Alonso, preparing his side for Monday’s Premier League opener away at Fulham, cut a firm figure when asked where Fernandez will be when the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he's getting ready for Monday,” he said at Thursday’s news conference.

The Spaniard stressed that Fernandez has “integrated really well” since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is “training really well”, underlining the midfielder’s professionalism in a summer that could easily have turned messy.

“I see him with a really good attitude and that's what we want,” Alonso added.

For all the outside noise and City’s interest, Chelsea’s position is now on record. Fernandez starts the season as a key part of Alonso’s plans. How long that remains unchallenged may define the next stage of his career.
