Trabzonspor Parts Ways with Head Coach Fatih Tekke

Trabzonspor have drawn a line under the Fatih Tekke era, accepting the head coach’s “emotional” resignation days after initially trying to keep him in place.

Tekke, who guided the club to a third-place finish in the Super Lig last season and delivered the Turkish Cup, stepped down in the aftermath of a bruising Europa League exit. Trabzonspor were dismantled 5-0 on aggregate by Ferencvaros in the play-off round, a defeat that cut deep and pushed the 48-year-old to offer his resignation.

At first, the club pushed back. On Friday, officials suggested Tekke had acted under the “intense emotional impact” of the European collapse and refused to let him go. It looked like a wobble, not a split.

That stance has now flipped.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Trabzonspor confirmed they had reached a “mutual understanding” with Tekke and agreed to part ways “in line with Trabzonspor’s interests and long-term objectives”.

The club’s message was clear: this was not a sacking, but a reset.

They underlined the scale of Tekke’s contribution over roughly 18 months in charge, stressing that he had “brought significant value to Trabzonspor”, aided the development of new signings and delivered “important sporting and financial gains” during his tenure. The Turkish Cup triumph, they noted, ensured he “once again wrote his name into Trabzonspor’s history”.

The turning point came with Tekke’s insistence that he would never allow his presence to damage the club. From there, both sides agreed that “drawing a new roadmap, prioritising the club’s interests above all else, had become unavoidable”.

Trabzonspor closed their statement by thanking their departing coach for his “efforts, his dedicated work, the successes he delivered, and the value he added”.

Now the club must prove that this emotional break can fuel a fresh start rather than signal a slide.
