Tottenham Break Transfer Record for Defender Alice Sombath

Tottenham have made their biggest statement yet in the women’s transfer market, breaking their club record to prise France international defender Alice Sombath away from Lyon.

The fee is officially undisclosed, but it eclipses the sum believed to have brought Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset to north London for around £375,000 last year. For Spurs, this is a line in the sand. For Sombath, it is a leap into the most demanding league of her career at just 22.

From Lyon’s dynasty to Spurs’ ambition

Sombath arrives with a résumé that already reads like a veteran’s. Five seasons at European powerhouse Lyon. 102 appearances. Five straight domestic league titles. A place in the 2021-22 Women’s Champions League-winning squad.

She grew up in the pressure cooker of French elite football: Paris FC academy, then into the youth ranks at Paris St-Germain, before Lyon moved for her in 2020. Each step was a promotion. Now comes the biggest one.

“I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about,” she said, outlining exactly why the Women’s Super League continues to lure Europe’s brightest.

She has watched from afar, and Spurs have clearly caught her eye. “I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”

A defender built for the modern game

Sombath is no specialist in a single role. She can anchor the back line at centre-back or step wide to right-back, giving Tottenham tactical flexibility and depth in two key positions.

Her international pedigree runs just as deep as her club experience. She has represented France at every age group from under-16s through to the senior side, and featured in all of France’s matches at Euro 2025, starting three games in the group stage. Big tournaments, big stages, big expectations – all already part of her footballing education.

Tottenham manager Martin Ho made it clear this signing has been a long-term pursuit, not a late scramble.

“She’s a player we’ve followed closely for some time and one who fits the profile of what we’re building here,” he said. “She has already shown real maturity in her performances, and we believe she has all the qualities to continue developing into a top player within our environment.

“Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day. This is another important addition as we continue building for the future. We can't wait to get started with Alice and welcome her into the group.”

Aggressive without the ball, composed with it, and hardened by Lyon’s standards – it is exactly the blend Tottenham have lacked in their back line in recent years.

Spurs move early, and with intent

Sombath is not an isolated marquee splash. She is part of a coherent, early-window push that suggests Spurs know exactly where they want to go and who they need to get there.

Tottenham have already secured six signings in this window, including Sombath. She joins Shekeira Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra and Selma Panengstuen in a squad that is being reshaped decisively rather than tweaked cautiously.

Business done early, key targets landed, and a record fee spent on a defender who has already lived the standards Spurs are chasing.
