Thomas Partey Set to Leave Villarreal After Contract Decision

Thomas Partey’s brief spell at Villarreal CF is heading for an early end, with the Ghana midfielder expected to leave the club this summer after the Spanish side decided not to trigger the option in his contract.

The 31-year-old arrived in Castellón last year on a free transfer following the expiration of his deal with Arsenal F.C., signing a one-year agreement that carried an option for an additional season. It looked like a sensible reset for a player who once dominated midfields for Atlético Madrid and commanded a major move to the Premier League.

The revival never quite caught fire.

Partey has battled to nail down a regular starting place at Villarreal, his rhythm repeatedly broken by minor injuries and fitness issues. He has still managed 30 appearances across all competitions, a tally that underlines his willingness to compete, but not one that reflects a guaranteed role at the heart of the side.

The club’s stance is now clear. With the season drawing to a close, Villarreal are reportedly unwilling to activate the extension clause, a decision that will send Partey back onto the market as a free agent in the coming window.

For the player, it marks another sharp turn in a career that has already taken him from Tema to Madrid, London, and now back out of Spain. For Ghana, it changes very little.

Partey remains central to the Black Stars’ long-term plans. Barring a major surprise, he is widely expected to be part of Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as the national team builds toward another tilt at football’s biggest stage.

His club future may be uncertain. His international relevance is not.
