Slavko Vincic, the Slovenian official who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19, has retired from professional refereeing, the Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) announced on Monday.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” the NZS stated on its website, drawing a clear line under a journey that ended on the sport’s grandest stage.

At 46, Vincic walked away having reached the pinnacle. By handling the World Cup final, the federation of the Adriatic nation said, he “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history” – a bold claim, but one backed by the accolades that followed his last tournament.
