Sheffield Wednesday Sign Liverpool Winger Kieran Morrison on Loan

Sheffield Wednesday have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison.

The 19-year-old, a Northern Ireland international who prefers the right flank, arrives at Hillsborough on the back of a breakout year in Liverpool’s academy and his first steps into senior football.

A rising talent from Liverpool’s ranks

Morrison made his first-team debut for Liverpool in October, coming on in the Carabao Cup last-16 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. He featured again off the bench in March during the FA Cup win away at Wolves, further underlining his progress through the club’s system.

Born in Manchester but representing Northern Ireland, Morrison lit up Premier League 2 last season. He hit 15 goals and laid on seven assists for Liverpool’s Under-21s, form that earned him a place on the shortlist for the Premier League Two Player of the Year award.

Liverpool moved quickly to secure his future, handing him a new four-year contract in May. A month later he stepped onto the international stage, making his senior debut for Northern Ireland in their friendly victory over Guinea in June.

“The rebuild is now” – Morrison buys into Owls project

Speaking to the Owls’ website, Morrison made it clear why he chose Wednesday.

"It's a massive club with great history and even better fans. Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it," he said.

"It's a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.

"I want to show the fans, the gaffer and everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here."

His words fit neatly with the club’s wider reset, as Wednesday look to inject youth, pace and intensity into a side aiming to climb the League One table.

Wilson: Short call, big conviction

Owls sporting director Simon Wilson was equally clear about why Wednesday pushed for the deal.

"Kieran is a player with huge potential," Wilson said. "During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.

"Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person.

"It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran's enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started."

The message is simple: Wednesday see Morrison as ready to contribute now, not just one for tomorrow.

Morrison is available for selection immediately and could make his debut in Thursday’s League One home game against Bradford City, a first chance for Hillsborough to judge one of Liverpool’s most talked-about youngsters up close.
