Rokas Pukstas: A Relentless Midfield Engine for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have gone to Croatia for their new midfield engine, and they know exactly what they’re getting – a runner, a fighter and a late-arriving menace in the box.

Rokas Pukstas, 22, has spent his entire senior career at Hajduk Split, never kicking a ball in domestic football outside Croatia. That changes now. After four seasons in the first team, 142 games, 27 goals and 10 assists, he lands on Teesside with a clear identity and a style that should fit the Championship’s intensity.

A specialist in late arrivals

Ask those who have watched him closely, and one trait comes up first.

Croatian football journalist Lovre Nikolac has seen Pukstas develop at Hajduk and says his timing into the penalty area is his calling card.

“One of Pukstas’ main qualities is arriving late in the box to provide a goal threat,” Nikolac told BBC Radio Tees.

Defenders think they’ve dealt with the initial danger. Then he appears.

“He is very good arriving late and as soon as he steps on the pitch, as soon as there's an aerial duel, he wins it,” Nikolac said. “He can jump high. He's very strong and his play with headers is amazing. If there's one thing that he cannot improve on, I think it's that.

“He arrives late and [also] picks up the scraps sometimes.”

So Boro aren’t just signing legs in midfield. They’re signing goals from deep, a player who comes alive when the ball is recycled and the box is disorganised.

Built for Kim Hellberg’s demands

If there is one thing Kim Hellberg demands, it is work without the ball. Pukstas, by all accounts, lives in that world.

Nikolac doesn’t dress it up.

“Obviously we can talk about the goals, but it's what he does off the ball,” he said. “He just runs. There's no other way to put it. He never stops and he does everything that's needed from him.

“And he's box to box, so up and down the pitch the whole game and never looks tired.”

That kind of engine matters in the Championship, where games can turn into long, physical battles and midfielders who fade after an hour get found out. Pukstas, an USA under-23 international, arrives with a reputation for stamina and relentlessness, the sort of profile that allows a coach to press high and trust his midfield to recover.

Room to grow

He is not the finished article. Not yet.

Nikolac is clear about where Pukstas still needs to sharpen up if he is to become a complete midfielder in England.

“He's not great at passing, but everything else he's got spot on. Defending, reading the game, late arrivals, scoring goals,” he said.

“But if he can improve that, then you have a whole player, a true midfielder. You can use him wherever you want. He has the physicality to do anything.”

That is the challenge now. Can Boro polish his technical game, tidy his distribution and turn raw running power and penalty-box instinct into a midfielder who dictates as well as disrupts?

The stage is bigger, the league more unforgiving, the pace unrelenting. Pukstas has the legs and the leap. If the passing comes, how high is his ceiling in English football?
