Rodri's Future at Manchester City: Real Madrid's Interest Grows

Manchester City face a defining few weeks in the future of Rodri, with the club confident of tying down their midfield cornerstone to a new contract while quietly bracing for a heavyweight move from Real Madrid and a scramble from Europe’s elite.

The Spain captain, fresh from a World Cup-winning summer in which he took the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player, has yet to sign the new deal City placed in front of him. His current contract runs out next June. Talks with the 30-year-old are ongoing and, inside the Etihad, there remains a belief that he can be persuaded to commit his peak years to Pep Guardiola’s side.

But his performances for Spain have changed the landscape.

Real Madrid had previously cooled on the idea of signing Rodri. That stance has shifted. His commanding displays at the heart of Spain’s midfield, coupled with his leadership as captain, have pushed him back to the top of their agenda, and the European champions are understood to be preparing a formal bid.

The World Cup not only reinforced his status as one of the best midfielders in the game, it also eased doubts over his body. Rodri has endured two injury-affected seasons, yet his reliability throughout the summer reassured potential buyers about his durability. He has, however, returned to England from north America needing surgery on a back problem, a reminder of the physical toll of his role.

Madrid know the terrain is not entirely hostile. In March, Rodri did little to shut the door on the Bernabéu.

“Having played for Atlético [in 2018-19] before would not prevent me from playing for Real Madrid,” he said. “There are other players who have done that before. Maybe not direct transfers, but eventually. You can’t turn down one of the world’s best clubs.”

Those words will not have been forgotten in Manchester or Madrid.

Dominoes across Europe

Any formal Madrid move for Rodri would not happen in isolation. It would send a jolt through the market.

Barcelona, suddenly stripped of Frenkie de Jong for months after a medial collateral ligament injury, are monitoring the situation. A player of Rodri’s profile is rare, and the chance to prise him away from City – even in a crowded field of suitors – would tempt a club looking for a long-term anchor in midfield.

Paris Saint-Germain also admire him. For a club chasing control and identity in the centre of the pitch, Rodri represents both.

Madrid, though, may have to sell to buy. They are expected to complete the signing of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee understood to be in excess of €100m (£85m). Adding Rodri on top of that would likely require a significant outgoing, with Aurélien Tchouaméni the most obvious candidate.

The 26-year-old Frenchman is thought to have agreed a new contract at the Bernabéu, although the club have not announced it. His current deal runs until summer 2028, which keeps his market value high and his sale potentially lucrative.

Premier League eyes on Madrid’s midfield

If Madrid open the door to Tchouaméni, the line will form quickly. Manchester United retain a long-standing interest in the midfielder. Earlier in the window, though, they doubted whether a fee of around £70m – the figure Madrid would likely demand – would fit within their budget.

United’s recruitment team have also tracked Eduardo Camavinga. The Frenchman, younger and more versatile, would cost between €50m and €60m, a sizeable outlay but one that could reshape their midfield for years.

All of which feeds back to Rodri. If City hold their nerve and secure his signature, Madrid may be forced into a different configuration, perhaps keeping Tchouaméni and Camavinga together. If they sense vulnerability and move decisively, the ripple effect could redraw midfields from Manchester to Paris and Barcelona.

For now, City cling to optimism and negotiations. Madrid weigh up the numbers and the timing. Rodri, the calm at the centre of every storm on the pitch, suddenly finds himself at the eye of the transfer window’s biggest one off it.
