Riyad Mahrez Transfer Buzz After Al-Shabab Defeat

Al-Shabab’s defeat to Al-Hilal on Friday night did not just cost them three points. It lit up the transfer market again – with Riyad Mahrez right at the centre of it.

Mahrez, 35, is currently a free agent after his abrupt exit from Al-Ahli at the end of last season, when the club unilaterally terminated his deal a year before it was due to expire. His name had already been circulating around Al-Shabab in recent hours, but Al-Malik’s words pushed the story into a different gear.

The Algerian winger’s future was already under the microscope, with reports pointing to a possible return to Al-Ahli and suggestions that Al-Ittihad are also keen to bring him in. Now Al-Shabab have stepped clearly into the frame, backed by their president’s public admiration and that pointed 48-hour timeline.

Mahrez joined Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023 from Manchester City, bringing a glittering European pedigree into the Saudi league. Over three seasons he delivered on that reputation, helping the Jeddah club win two AFC Champions League Elite titles and one Saudi Super Cup, and establishing himself as one of the league’s headline foreign stars.

His sudden availability has turned him into one of the most coveted names of the current window. For Al-Shabab, still reeling from a 2-0 loss to the reigning Roshn League powerhouse, the chance to land a player of his calibre offers both a statement and a solution.
