Referee Injured in Pre-Season Friendly Chaos

A pre-season friendly in eastern France lurched into ugly territory on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a brawl between players.

The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between Metz and Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers snapped late in the first half.

Melee erupts under a “Respect the referee” banner

The flashpoint came in the 40th minute. What began as a routine tussle over a shirt pull between two opposing players suddenly escalated, with teammates from both sides rushing in and the confrontation quickly turning into a melee.

Demoncay moved in to separate the players and restore control. Instead, she was caught in the chaos. Video circulating on social media shows her being knocked over in the crush and hitting the turf heavily, the scuffle unfolding directly in front of a large pitchside sign bearing a bitterly ironic message: “Respect the referee.”

She stayed down, clutching her arm, as assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch. The game stopped while they tried to calm the situation and assess her condition, with players from both clubs looking on as the official received treatment on the grass.

Concussed referee forced off at half-time

After several minutes on the ground, Demoncay was able to continue, though not in the same role. She resumed the match as an assistant referee once play restarted, attempting to see out the half despite the heavy fall.

She did not reappear after the interval. A concussion diagnosis ended her involvement at half-time, with another assistant stepping in to take over her duties on the touchline.

On the field, Metz went on to win the friendly 3-1 as both clubs fine-tuned preparations for their upcoming campaigns. Off it, reaction was more muted. In their match report, Fortuna Sittard referred to the incident only as a “remarkable moment,” offering no further detail. Metz made no mention of the episode in their own coverage of the game.
