Real Madrid's Midfield Evolution: Mourinho's Plan for Arda Guler

Real Madrid are edging towards the start of the 2026-27 season with Jose Mourinho already putting his stamp back on the Bernabeu. The campaign opens on Saturday against Espanyol, and while pre-season has been largely productive, it has also exposed one glaring gap.

Mourinho has seen the squad reinforced with targeted moves. Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Yan Diomande have arrived to plug obvious holes and deepen the rotation. The structure looks stronger. The dressing room looks fuller.

But the heart of the team is still missing a piece.

Real Madrid have so far failed to land the midfield controller Mourinho wanted. Enzo Fernandez slipped away. Rodri too. Those options have gone, and with the market offering few alternatives at that level, the Portuguese coach is now turning his gaze inward.

The name at the top of that internal list is Arda Guler.

Speaking to El Chiringuito, in comments relayed by Diario AS, Mourinho was clear about where he sees the Türkiye international heading in tactical terms.

"I love Güler. I think something similar is going to happen to Modric or Bernardo Silva. You start in one position and end up in another, you start as a 10 and you will finish as an 8 or 6. I think Arda will go in that direction with his evolution and knowledge of the game."

It is a bold projection. Comparing Guler’s trajectory to that of Luka Modric and Bernardo Silva hints at a long-term plan: turn a gifted creator into the brain of the midfield, not just the flourish at the edge of it.

That change will not come overnight. Guler is unlikely to be dropped straight into a deeper role from the opening weekend, especially with another solution already being prepared.

Bernardo Silva is being lined up to operate in that zone now. The Portuguese playmaker, brought in as one of the headline arrivals of the summer, is expected to shoulder much of the creative and organisational burden between the lines. Mourinho has spoken in glowing terms about his compatriot and has pushed back at the idea that Silva’s signing was primarily a political blow aimed at Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

For Mourinho, Silva “brings everything” to a side still being rebuilt in his image. And as the new season kicks off, the intrigue lies in how quickly Guler can grow into the role his coach has mapped out for him – and whether that evolution can finally solve Madrid’s search for a midfield general from within their own walls.
