Rayan Ait-Nouri Aims for Evolution at City

Rayan Ait-Nouri is not content with just ticking the boxes of a modern full-back. Under Enzo Maresca, he wants numbers – and he wants them quickly.

The 25-year-old, speaking after scoring his first goal for City in the win over a K-League XI, made it clear that this pre-season is about more than fitness and familiarity. It is about evolution.

“I would like to,” he said when asked if he wants to score regularly. “It was my first goal for City, and it's a part of the game I really enjoy. I have always tried to play in an attacking way, but I don't score all the time.

“It's a real sensation for me, and I want to learn every day, work more and more to add as much to my game as I can.”

Those words fit perfectly with the way Maresca used him. This was not the conservative, touchline-hugging role often associated with his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Instead, Ait-Nouri operated high up the pitch, tucked in behind striker Mubama and sharing the creative burden with Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo.

It was a clear tactical statement. Maresca wants his wide defenders stepping into midfield, threatening the box, asking different questions. Ait-Nouri, with his natural attacking instinct, looks a prime candidate to thrive in that system.

The reward came with that first City goal and, just as importantly, with Maresca’s first win in charge. The victory over the K-League XI may not define a season, but it does give shape to a pre-season that had been searching for a positive result.

Now the level jumps.

Atletico next, Arsenal looming

City close their tour on Sunday against Atletico Madrid, a fixture that will offer a far sharper examination of Maresca’s ideas and Ait-Nouri’s new responsibilities.

“It will be a different game than the last two games,” Ait-Nouri said. “We really enjoy playing this kind of game against one of the better teams in Europe; it will help us really prepare for next season.

“We know about Atletico's level, and it will be good to play them before we face Arsenal next week.”

Atletico’s intensity, their organisation, their refusal to give space between the lines – that is exactly the environment in which Maresca will discover how far along his attacking full-back experiment really is.

For Ait-Nouri, it is another chance to push higher, to time those late runs, to feel that “real sensation” again in front of goal. Pre-season goals do not earn trophies, but they can change a player’s mindset.

If this is the version of Ait-Nouri that Maresca unlocks – aggressive, advanced, and hungry to score – City’s left side could look very different by the time Arsenal arrive.
