Rafael Leao: From €100m Star to Manchester United Target
Rafael Leao has pushed himself closer to the Premier League shop window, and Manchester United can feel it.
The AC Milan forward, long admired across Europe, has openly name-checked United as one of the English clubs he follows – and not by accident. With his future in Italy increasingly fragile and his price tag dropping, the path out of San Siro is starting to look like a runway.
From €100m man to cut‑price prize
Since arriving from Lille in August 2019, Leao has grown into one of Serie A’s headline acts. Eighty goals and 65 assists in 291 games for Milan tell part of the story; the rest is written in the way defenders back off when he runs at them. British GQ have called him a “global superstar”. Max Allegri and CBS Sports have both gone with “world-class”. Different voices, same conclusion.
At his peak, Milan treated him like a priceless asset. Interested clubs were quoted over €100 million (£87m). That era is over. A flat season, stalled contract talks and Leao’s refusal to sign fresh terms have changed the mood in Milan. The club is now prepared to cash in for around €50m (£43.5m), a fee that drags him from fantasy signing into realistic opportunity for Europe’s elite.
INEOS and Manchester United have sensed that shift. On May 1, intermediaries offered Leao to United, his camp actively working to engineer a move away from Italy. The shop window has become a sales pitch.
“I like Manchester United”
Then came the public nudge.
In a recent interview, relayed by Alfredo Pedullà, Leao was asked which English sides he keeps an eye on. His answer did little to cool the rumours.
“Of course, I watch the Premier League a lot,” he said. “I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV.”
For a player in his position, those words land with intent. If Leao has any influence over his next destination, United and Arsenal sit in the front row. One offers the Ronaldo connection and a starring role in a rebuild, the other a slick, upwardly mobile project under Mikel Arteta.
The reality, though, is simpler and colder: it will come down to who actually bids, and how serious they are.
United, Fenerbahce… and the heavyweights on hold
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as of May 23 the strongest interest is coming from Manchester United and Fenerbahce. Two very different propositions.
Fenerbahce can offer passion, stature in Turkey and European nights, but the Super Lig does not carry the global pull of the Premier League. For a player who grew up idolising Ronaldo and has already been framed as a global star, the lure of Old Trafford feels obvious.
United, for their part, are not alone in having Leao’s name on a list. Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered the chance to move for him, just as United have. For now, though, both giants are said to be prioritising other targets. That hesitation opens a window for INEOS to act while the room is less crowded.
There is even a suggestion that United’s new hierarchy could try to drive the price down further. On April 30, they were tipped to consider offering Milan up to three players in part-exchange to cut the cash outlay on Leao.
The Serie A route to Old Trafford
Leao would not be the only arrival from Italy if United get their way. The club are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a £38m move understood to be nearing completion. The Brazilian is viewed as the next piece in a remodelled spine.
Once that deal is tied up, attention is expected to swing fully onto the flanks. Leao is seen as the next major Serie A target, a statement signing for the left wing.
He is not the only name on the board. United are also tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they search for fresh options on that side. The message is clear: the left wing is under review.
That has obvious implications for Marcus Rashford. United’s stance on his situation has been under scrutiny, with fresh complications emerging around a potential permanent move to Barcelona. Uncertainty around one academy star, and an opportunity to land a 26‑year‑old in his prime from Milan, gives INEOS a sharp decision to make.
Following in Ronaldo’s footsteps?
Strip it back, and the equation is stark. Milan are ready to sell. Leao wants a new chapter. United need a dynamic wide forward and have ownership intent on making bold, front‑line signings.
For Leao, Old Trafford would be more than just another move. It would be a chance to walk the same corridor once owned by his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, and to finally step into the Premier League spotlight he has long circled from afar.
The door is open. The only question now is whether United step through it before someone else does.
