Rafael Leao's Future Uncertain as Amorim Challenges Him to Fight

Rafael Leao spent the end of last season talking about a new adventure. England or Spain. A fresh start away from San Siro. At 27, the Portugal international made his intentions clear.

The market, though, has not played along.

With two weeks left in the transfer window and no concrete offers on the table, the winger who expected to be packing his bags looks increasingly likely to stay exactly where he is. His absence from the latest pre-season outing has only deepened the sense of uncertainty.

A four-goal show, and one notable absentee

In Wroclaw, Ruben Amorim had plenty to enjoy. His side tore into his former club United, hitting four without mercy. Samuel Chukwueze, Alphadjo Cisse, Goncalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all found the net in a confident, free-flowing display.

Leao, though, was nowhere to be seen.

He reported a muscle twinge before kick-off and sat the game out, prompting inevitable questions. Amorim, speaking to TMW, tried to calm any panic over the injury.

“I don't think it's a serious thing, but I don't know if he'll be ready,” the coach admitted.

So the mystery remains: is this just a minor physical issue, or the latest twist in a stalled transfer saga?

“He has to fight”: Amorim lays down the challenge

If Leao expected his status to guarantee him a starting berth, Amorim’s words cut through that assumption.

Pressed on where the winger fits into the battle for wide positions, the Portuguese coach did not dress anything up.

“I don't know, but Leao is one of our players. I've already said that we're happy to have him, he's a valuable player. So we'll see, but he has to fight.”

The message was sharp. No promises. No automatic privileges.

And the competition is real. Cisse, who scored and impressed, has pushed himself firmly into the conversation.

“I think Cisse, with the way that he played, will make things difficult. [Alexis] Saelemaekers has changed positions, it will be tough. We also have [Christian] Pulisic coming back, so we will have a lot of players who will be fighting for that place.”

The pressure finally told in Wroclaw for those on the pitch; they delivered. For Leao, the pressure is only just building.

With the window closing in and his options narrowing, the question is no longer where he wants to go. It’s whether he is ready to stay, fight, and prove he still belongs at the heart of this attack.
