Plymouth Argyle Secures First Away Win Against Doncaster Rovers

Plymouth Argyle finally found their away spark in Sky Bet League One, sweeping past winless Doncaster Rovers 3-2 to claim their first victory on the road this season.

Tom Cleverley’s side were far more dominant than the scoreline suggests. By the time Doncaster stirred, the points were already gone.

Evans sets the tone

Plymouth took a while to settle, but once they did, they controlled long stretches of the contest. The opener arrived on 28 minutes, and it was all about reacting first.

Oliver Irow’s strike forced Tommy Simkin into a save, the Doncaster goalkeeper parrying the effort back into a crowded box. Will Evans was sharper than anyone in red and white, turning the loose ball home to give Argyle the lead and a platform to build from.

Doncaster’s response before the break came mainly through Alfie May. He went close with an acrobatic bicycle kick that clipped a defender and looped over, a flash of inspiration that briefly lifted the home support but brought no reward.

May hits back from the spot

The second half opened with Doncaster’s best spell. The pressure told six minutes after the restart.

Owen Bailey was bundled over in the area by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed to the spot. May stepped up and, this time, he did not miss. His 51st-minute penalty dragged Rovers level and, for a moment, threatened to tilt the afternoon.

Any sense of a Doncaster revival, though, faded as quickly as it arrived.

Pepple and Watts kill it

Argyle reset, tightened up, and then struck with precision on the break.

On 74 minutes, Bim Pepple was released into space, racing clear of a stretched Doncaster back line. He kept his composure, picked his spot and finished calmly to restore Plymouth’s lead. It felt like a decisive moment. It was.

The game was effectively settled nine minutes later. A defensive mix-up in the Doncaster ranks gifted substitute Caleb Watts the simplest of chances in the 83rd minute. Presented with an empty net, he made no mistake, drilling in Plymouth’s third and sparking celebrations in the away end.

At 3-1, Doncaster’s earlier momentum had evaporated. The home side struggled to create anything of note as the clock ticked into stoppage time.

Late twist, but no drama

Only in the dying seconds did Rovers show any real threat. Deep into added time, Bayley McCann swung in a free-kick and Sean Grehan rose to thump a header past the keeper, a powerful consolation that came far too late to alter the outcome.

The whistle went soon after. Plymouth had their first away win of the campaign, and did it with authority. Doncaster, still searching for a first league victory, were left to ponder how long this early-season rut can last.
