Orlando Pirates Mourn Loss of Nani Chakane

Orlando Pirates are mourning the loss of a much‑loved figure in the club’s extended family after the passing of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane, the wife of long‑serving club stalwart Mr Franklin Chakane.

Mrs Chakane passed away on 23 June 2026, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from within the Buccaneers community and across the wider football fraternity. The club has wrapped its arms around one of its own, asking supporters to keep the Chakane family firmly in their thoughts and prayers during a deeply painful time.

In a message of condolence, Orlando Pirates extended heartfelt sympathies to Mr Franklin Chakane, the Chakane family, relatives, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Nani’s presence. For many around Soweto and within the club structures, the Chakane name is woven into the fabric of Orlando Pirates’ history; her loss will be felt far beyond the walls of the family home.

Funeral Details

Details of the funeral have been confirmed. The service will take place on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa in Orlando East, Soweto, starting at 09:00. After the church service, the funeral procession is scheduled to leave at around 11:00 for the burial at Nasrec Cemetery.

Mourners are gathering at the family home at 1173 Jacobs Street, Protea North, Soweto, where the Chakane family is receiving visitors and messages of support.

At a club that prides itself on community and shared identity, this is a moment of collective grief. For Orlando Pirates and their supporters, standing with the Chakane family now is not a gesture. It is an obligation.
