Nico Elvedi's Debut: A Strong Start at Leeds United

Nico Elvedi walked into English football the hard way – under the lights, away from home, up against Chris Wood, and with a place in the next round of the Carabao Cup on the line.

Leeds United’s summer signing made his debut in the second-round win over Nottingham Forest and came away with exactly what a defender wants from a first outing: a victory, a battle, and the feeling he belongs.

“It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage,” Elvedi said, still buzzing from the contest.

Forest pushed. Leeds held. The tie turned into a physical examination of the visitors’ back line, and Elvedi found himself thrown straight into the thick of it against the imposing figure of Wood.

“My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy. I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well,” he reflected. “There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK.”

No easing-in period, no gentle introduction. Just a direct duel with one of the most combative forwards in the country and a test of whether the new man could handle the pace and power of the English game. He leaned into it.

Beyond the 90 minutes, Elvedi spoke like a player who already feels at home at Leeds.

“I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players.”

That sense of ease is striking when set against the backdrop of the decision he had to make this summer. Elvedi left Borussia Monchengladbach after 11 years, closing a chapter that shaped his entire professional career.

“It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here,” he said.

One long story has ended. At Leeds, after one bruising, satisfying night in the Carabao Cup, another one has clearly begun.
