At an auction for the Neymar Jr. Institute, with the lights, cameras and familiar swirl of speculation around him, Neymar chose a different theme: the present, not the farewell tour.

The Brazilian star, who has already stepped away from the national team, insisted he is not yet ready to script the final chapter of his club career. Retirement? Not on the agenda. Not yet.

“I don't know how long I'll keep playing, I'm not thinking about stopping, nor do I know how long I'll carry on,” he said on his YouTube channel, speaking candidly as ever. “I have a contract with Santos until December.”

That contract has become his compass. No grand declarations, no staged goodbyes, just a simple commitment to the club where it all began.

“I intend to see it through, to honour the Santos shirt as best I can,” he continued, outlining a clear sequence: finish the year, then decide. “And then I'll think about it when my contract ends – whether I stay at Santos, leave, move on, stop playing or carry on. I really don't know what I'm going to do. There's still a long way to go until December, so let's take it one step at a time.”

For a player who has lived most of his career under a spotlight bright enough to blur perspective, that “one step at a time” sounds almost radical. Especially after the way his international story closed.

Neymar recently called time on Brazil duty after a bruising World Cup campaign in which his body betrayed him again. Muscular injuries reduced one of the game’s great soloists to a bit-part role, limiting him to just two appearances during Brazil’s run at the tournament. For a footballing nation that has long looked to him as its leading man, it felt like an ending without a proper finale.

Yet the 32-year-old – Brazil’s all-time leading scorer – insists the narrative around his fitness no longer matches the reality.

“I'm feeling good physically, more and more so, out on the pitch,” he said. “And that's what matters. I want to always improve even if I'm at the end of my career.”

The line hangs there: “even if I'm at the end of my career.” It acknowledges the stage of life he is in without conceding that the curtain is about to drop. He sounds like a player who understands the clock but refuses to let it dictate his every touch.

What comes through most strongly is perspective. Not frustration, not regret.

“I'm very happy to have experienced what I've experienced up to now,” Neymar said. “I'm very grateful to God for what he has given me. I have nothing to complain about my career.”

No complaints, no clear end date, and no rush to decide. For now, the story is simple: honour the Santos shirt, stay fit, enjoy the ball at his feet. December will ask the big questions. Neymar is content to let them wait.
