Newcastle United Face Tough Decision on Nick Woltemade

Newcastle United are already staring at a huge call over Nick Woltemade – just one year after making him their record signing.

The German striker arrived on Tyneside for £69 million and exploded out of the blocks, hitting four goals in his first five Premier League games and whipping up talk of a new long‑term talisman at St. James’ Park. The fairytale faded. Woltemade’s debut season settled into something more ordinary: eight goals and three assists across 33 league appearances. Promising, but not transformative.

A new manager has changed the picture again. Matthias Jaissle has spent pre-season shifting Woltemade around the frontline, using him both as a central striker and as a No. 10. The experiment has yet to catch fire. The 22-year-old has struggled to produce many standout moments across the summer schedule, and the uncertainty over his role has invited outside interest.

Now comes the twist.

Dortmund circle as Newcastle weigh their options

Sky Sports Germany report that Borussia Dortmund have already made initial contact with Newcastle over a move for Woltemade, sounding out the possibility of taking him back to the Bundesliga.

The German outlet say Dortmund have internally drawn up a small list of “two or three names” who could be moved on before the transfer deadline, with forward Fabio Silva among those considered saleable. That departure is key. Until BVB clear space and wages in their attacking department, they are not ready to push ahead with any serious move for Woltemade.

“According to our information, BVB has inquired (about Woltemade),” Sky Germany reported, noting that Dortmund made “some preliminary inquiries a few weeks ago about a potential transfer” for the Newcastle forward.

At this stage, the proposal on the table is for a loan rather than a permanent deal. From Newcastle’s perspective, that matters. A temporary switch would allow them to keep long-term control of a player they invested heavily in only last summer, while offering Woltemade a route back to familiar surroundings in Germany to rebuild both confidence and market value.

A delicate decision for Jaissle and the hierarchy

Nothing has been agreed. There is no sign yet that Newcastle have accepted Dortmund’s approach, or even decided they are open to a loan in principle. The talks remain at an early stage, and the first domino still hasn’t fallen: Silva’s future.

Until Dortmund resolve whether Fabio Silva leaves, all parties are effectively on standby. If he stays, BVB’s need – and room – for Woltemade shrinks. If he goes, the pressure on Newcastle to make a call will spike in the final days of the window.

So the club that broke their transfer record for Woltemade last year now face a stark choice: double down on their investment and keep him on Tyneside for Jaissle to mould, or send him back to the Bundesliga and hope a season in yellow and black turns him into the player they thought they were buying.
