Newcastle Targets Another La Masia Talent: Guille Fernández

Newcastle’s youth revolution is gathering pace, and Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy could be the next place they raid.

Another La Masia talent in Newcastle’s sights

Newcastle have already moved decisively for 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster the midfield. On Wednesday, reports suggested they were closing in on 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate.

Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, the Magpies are pushing hard for another 18-year-old midfielder – this time from Barcelona’s academy.

“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández reported. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”

Guille Fernández has not yet broken into Barcelona’s senior side, but he has climbed through La Masia and established himself with the club’s reserve team. He already has Spain Under-19 caps and offers versatility across central midfield, a profile that fits neatly with Newcastle’s push for adaptable, high-upside prospects.

Barcelona want a safety net

Heading into the 2027-27 season, Guille carries a market value of €3 million and is listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster. The reality, though, is stark: minutes in Xavi’s senior setup are scarce, and the path to regular football in Catalonia is steep.

Fernández’s reporting underlines Barcelona’s stance. They do not want a clean break. Any deal is expected to include some form of buy-back clause, a mechanism that lets the Spanish giants retain a degree of control over the midfielder’s long-term future while cashing in now.

No specific transfer fee has been reported, and there are no concrete details yet on how a buy-back might be structured. What is clear is that interest is not limited to Newcastle. Fernández notes that other clubs are in the race, and a bidding war could easily nudge the price up if Barcelona sense leverage.

Even so, the claim that Guille is “close to Newcastle” points toward another step in the club’s youth-focused rebuild. One more teenager, one more long-term bet.
