Newcastle Signs Bazoumana Touré for £42m as Gordon Replacement
Newcastle have moved quickly and decisively. Anthony Gordon is gone. Bazoumana Touré is in.
The club have completed the signing of the Ivory Coast winger from Hoffenheim in a deal worth a reported £42 million ($56m), a bold investment in a 20-year-old who has rocketed through European football in barely two seasons.
Touré arrives as the direct response to Gordon’s departure and Newcastle’s failed push for Víctor Muñoz, but this is no consolation signing. This is a bet on upside, pace and personality.
“It was my dream”
Touré’s first words as a Newcastle player carried the enthusiasm of someone who knows exactly what this move means for his career.
"I'm very, very happy to be here. It was my dream since I was young to play in the Premier League for a big team like Newcastle," he said, the scale of the step clearly not lost on him.
He leaned quickly into the identity the club have tried to build under Eddie Howe.
"Newcastle is like a family, which will help me show my best on the pitch. I will give my best every single day for this shirt.
"I'm very excited to join Newcastle and I can't wait to meet my team-mates, the supporters and everybody at the club. I'm also very excited to play at St James' Park for the first time."
That last line matters. St James’ Park has not been kind to timid debutants. Newcastle are banking on a player who wants that stage, not one who shrinks from it.
A rapid rise across Europe
Two years ago, Touré had not kicked a competitive ball in one of Europe’s top leagues. Now he arrives in the Premier League with a European campaign on his CV and a World Cup behind him.
He left Ivory Coast for Sweden in early 2024, joining Hammarby and wasting little time in attracting attention. His performances there pushed him into the Bundesliga, securing a move to Hoffenheim a year later.
Germany is where his reputation took off. Last season he scored five goals and supplied nine assists, numbers that did more than pad a stat sheet. They helped drive Hoffenheim to a fifth-placed finish and a Europa League spot, a tangible impact in a demanding league.
Clubs notice players who change league positions and prize money. Newcastle certainly did.
World Cup experience at 20
Touré’s rise has not been confined to club football. He made his international debut for Ivory Coast in October 2025 and forced his way into the squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Three appearances on that stage at 20 years old add another layer to his profile: not just potential, but temperament. Newcastle are not just signing a highlight reel; they are signing someone who has already handled tournament pressure in national colours.
That international exposure also feeds into Eddie Howe’s assessment.
Howe’s verdict: “A really high ceiling”
Newcastle’s head coach made it clear this is a long-term football decision as much as an immediate patch for Gordon’s exit.
"We're really pleased to have been able to bring Bazoumana to Newcastle United," Howe said.
"He has shown his ability to perform in a top European league during his time in Germany and has gained really good experience with his national team, especially at this summer's World Cup.
"We feel that he's a player with a really high ceiling -- he's somebody who we believe can offer us something different. He also has a lot of potential to unlock and we're really looking forward to working with him."
“Something different” is the key phrase. Gordon’s departure leaves a gap in direct running and end product on the left. Touré, also left-sided, arrives with creativity as well as goals and offers Newcastle a fresh tactical angle in wide areas.
Building the new-look Newcastle
Touré becomes Newcastle’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims. Two young recruits, both with European experience, both with room to grow.
It tells its own story about where the club see their next step: younger, higher ceiling, resale value, but ready to contribute now.
The fee, the profile, the timing – all of it underlines how much faith Newcastle are placing in Bazoumana Touré. The question now is simple and sharp.
Can the winger who lit up Hoffenheim and stepped onto the World Cup stage carry that fearless rise into the roar of St James’ Park?
