Mourinho's Call That Kept Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid on the phone call he believes helped keep Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid and out of Arsenal’s reach.

The Brazilian forward was one of the headline transfer stories of the summer, heavily linked with a blockbuster move to the Premier League. Arsenal were ready to go all in: a bid in the region of €150 million, a shattered transfer record, a torn-up wage structure – all for a 26-year-old whose previous deal was due to run out next summer.

For a moment, the door looked open. Then it slammed shut.

Vinicius chose Madrid. Again. The winger signed a lucrative new contract that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2032, extending what will be at least an eight-season stay in white. And Mourinho, back in the Real Madrid dugout this summer, says he made sure the player understood exactly what he was walking away from.

“Don’t go. It’s not worth it”

Speaking to El Chiringuito TV, Mourinho described the direct message he delivered to Vinicius when the Arsenal talk was raging.

“I called him, I told him Vini, where do you want to go? You only know Real Madrid,” Mourinho said.

Then came the warning.

“When you leave, then you’ll know what Real Madrid is. Don’t go. It’s not worth it. I was sure [he would stay] because he is in love with Real Madrid!”

That line – “the only way out from Real Madrid is down” – has long been part of the mythology around the club. Mourinho leaned on it again, reminding Vinicius that very few players leave the Bernabeu for a sporting upgrade.

Arsenal, for their part, threw everything they realistically could at the situation. The North London club were prepared to break their own ceiling, both in fee and salary, to land a superstar wide forward in his prime. A British-record transfer was on the table in theory, the kind of move that reshapes a project and a league.

But sentiment, status and silverware still carry weight. Vinicius stayed where he was adored and where he already knows the terrain, while Mourinho, back in charge at the Bernabeu, now gets to build his new Madrid around a player he clearly views as untouchable.

Arsenal move on. Real Madrid lock in their star. And Mourinho, once again, has made sure the story ends on his terms.
