The Rossoneri have leaned heavily on Jorge Mendes in this window, and the Portuguese agent has been a regular presence around the club. His latest visit to Milan reportedly opened the door to an audacious idea – testing the waters for Manchester City’s centre-back, whose name has now been placed firmly on Milan’s radar.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, initial contacts have already taken place, understood to be with Mendes. The 29-year-old is believed to be on City’s transfer list, a detail that instantly sharpened Milan’s interest. His profile fits several of the club’s current criteria: experience at the highest level, leadership at the back, and an age bracket that still offers a strong present without completely sacrificing the future.

There is another angle. Dias’ stock has dipped over the past two seasons, dragged down by injury problems. Milan sense an opening there, a chance to move for a defender who, at his peak, ranked among the best in Europe but might now be slightly more attainable than in previous summers.

That’s the theory. The reality is far more complicated.

The operation would be extremely difficult. Mendes may represent both the player and hold strong ties with Milan, but Manchester City’s situation is a major obstacle. Having already lost Rodri this summer, City are unlikely to welcome the idea of another cornerstone leaving the spine of Pep Guardiola’s team in the same window.

Then there is the money. Even with his recent issues, Dias would command a significant fee and a hefty salary package. For Milan, operating under clear financial constraints, putting together a deal of that scale would be a serious stretch.
