Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Potential Return for Chicago Fire Playoffs

Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season is not over yet. Not quite.

The Chicago Fire defender, initially ruled out for the rest of the year with a thigh tear, could now return in time to feature in the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.

The injury, sustained in late July, was first viewed as a hammer blow for both player and club. Mbokazi had been a rock in the Fire back line, earning rave reviews, a place in the MLS All Star game, and growing into one of the league’s standout young defenders.

After the Fire’s 1-1 draw away to the New York Red Bulls, coach Gregg Berhalter admitted the early prognosis had been too bleak.

“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter said. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”

That possibility changes the picture for Chicago. A fit-again Mbokazi, even late in the campaign, would offer a major boost to a side eyeing a deep playoff run. His blend of composure, timing in the tackle, and big-game temperament has already travelled well beyond MLS.

The 22-year-old carried that form onto the World Cup stage with Bafana, where he helped them reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history. He emerged from the tournament as one of its young breakout stars, his performances drawing attention far beyond South Africa and the United States.

But the timing of his potential comeback creates a problem for his country.

Bafana face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15. Those fixtures fall just days before Mbokazi is expected to be in contention for a return to the Chicago matchday squad. Any early clearance to play in MLS would likely come too late to influence the national team’s plans.

So while Chicago Fire may yet get their defensive pillar back when it matters most, Bafana look set to fight through a key international window without one of their brightest rising talents.
