Jara revealed they are in talks with English and German clubs and that United were among those to make enquiries.

The timing is intriguing. On paper, Darlow’s arrival as experienced backup makes another goalkeeper signing unlikely, and United are not expected to push hard for Gill now. But the fact they explored the deal at all underlines the ruthlessness of this rebuild. No position is being left alone, no hierarchy taken for granted.

For Gill, a move to Europe’s top leagues looks close. For United, it’s another sign that the club are scanning every corner of the market, even in areas that looked settled a few months ago.

Conceicao on the radar as Juventus juggle the books

While the goalkeeper situation simmers, the attacking picture has taken on a different twist.

United have been credited with serious interest in Francisco Conceicao, the 23-year-old winger who made 42 appearances for Juventus last season. His future in Turin has suddenly been thrown open by Juve’s own transfer manoeuvres.

With Bayer Leverkusen prospect Kerim Alajbegovic heading to the Allianz Stadium, Juventus are under pressure to balance the numbers. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Conceicao has been pushed towards the exit to help do exactly that, with United and Liverpool both making enquiries.

The price is not small. The Italian side are said to be looking for between £34m and £42m. For that, a buying club gets a young wide player already hardened by a full season in one of Europe’s most demanding environments.

From Juventus’ point of view, it is a tough but calculated sacrifice: cash in on a saleable asset to fund the next phase of their rebuild. From United’s perspective, it is an opportunity dropped straight into their lane. A Premier League move is described as likely, and the Old Trafford hierarchy know that, if they hesitate, a rival could move first.

Carrick’s squad already bears the marks of this summer’s surgery: a reshaped midfield, a restructured goalkeeping group, and fresh youth talent tucked away for the years ahead.
