Manchester United Faces Urgent Transfer Needs After Hull Defeat

Manchester United’s season did not just start badly. It started with a jolt that rattled every assumption around Michael Carrick’s project.

A 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City in the opening Premier League fixture has already sharpened the mood at Old Trafford. Semi Ajayi struck on 17 minutes, Nobel Mendy added a second before the break on 38, and United never truly recovered. For long spells, they were second best. Out-fought. Out-run. Out-thought.

This was supposed to be the night the new-look midfield took control. Instead, it exposed how much work still lies ahead.

Baleba in, but more to come

INEOS had moved early in the window to reshape Carrick’s engine room. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both started at the MKM Stadium, the pair handed immediate responsibility to set the tone in the middle of the pitch. They couldn’t.

Behind the scenes, United had just landed another major piece: Carlos Baleba. Brighton & Hove Albion accepted a £70 million offer, and the midfielder is heading to Carrington for his medical. The deal was agreed just before Arsenal opened their campaign with a win over Coventry City, a timely boost for United fans heading into the Hull game.

That optimism did not survive 90 minutes.

The performance has only intensified the sense that, while the midfield rebuild is close to complete on paper, the squad remains short in key areas.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that point on his YouTube channel, stressing that United are not done in the market.

"It's been a bad day for Manchester United, losing to Hull City on the opening 2026-27 Premier League game, but still Manchester United is looking for more signings after Carlos Baleba," Romano said. "The left-back position is going to be crucial, the left-back position is going to be definitely one to watch and I would still keep an eye on movements in that area."

Left-back in the spotlight

Luke Shaw started at left-back, as he did in all 38 Premier League games last season. He remains a pillar of Carrick’s side, but also a warning sign: there is no genuine rotation option behind him. One injury, one suspension, and the entire balance of the back line shifts.

That is why INEOS have been pushing for a new full-back. Lewis Hall was on the list, but Newcastle United have made their stance clear: they do not want to sell. United have been forced to look elsewhere.

Alejandro Balde is one of those alternatives. Romano confirmed that United have already spoken to the Barcelona defender’s camp.

"It's important to understand how much United can spend on that position because the name I gave you over the week as a possibility is Alejandro Balde," he explained. "Reports from Spain today are saying Balde is 100% leaving Barcelona following a meeting with his agent Jorge Mendes. Jorge Mendes has been looking for a solution for Balde in recent days. Jorge Mendes had a call with Manchester United, Man United were asking for conditions of a deal for Alejandro Balde. Let's see if they can afford in terms of transfer fee but also salary because Balde is on a big salary at Barcelona."

New Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has not closed the door on a sale, and that has encouraged suitors. For United, Balde represents a high-end option in the same bracket as Hall – but also a financial test of how far INEOS are willing to go to protect a single position.

Three more signings needed

The defeat at Hull did more than dent pride. It stripped away any illusion that one or two signings would be enough.

A left-back is non-negotiable. United cannot go into the heart of the season with Shaw as the only reliable choice on that flank.

Up front, the situation looks just as fragile. Benjamin Sesko came off the bench at the MKM Stadium, still working his way back to full fitness after a long lay-off. Matheus Cunha led the line from the start but struggled to impose himself or pin Hull’s defence back. The lack of a dominant, fully fit centre-forward was glaring, regardless of what happens with Joshua Zirkzee.

Then there is the centre of defence. On paper, the return of Matthijs de Ligt should steady things, but recent history tells a different story. Both De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez have endured repeated fitness problems during their time at Old Trafford. Building an entire season’s defensive plan on two injury-prone centre-backs is a risk that borders on reckless.

Hull exposed all of that in one night.

INEOS arrived to reshape Manchester United and drag the club back into contention at the top of the Premier League. The Baleba deal shows they are prepared to spend big in key areas. Now comes the real test: do they treat this opening-day shock as an early warning and act decisively, or gamble that this was just a stumble at the start of a very long season?
