Manchester United vs Hull City: Carrick's Premier League Challenge

Manchester United open their Premier League season at Hull City on Saturday lunchtime, the first real examination of Michael Carrick’s reign now he has the job on a permanent basis.

Third place last season restored some pride and, crucially, brought the club back to the Champions League for the first time in three years. That return raises the stakes. Carrick now has to juggle expectations at home and in Europe, and a trip to newly promoted Hull is exactly the sort of fixture where United are expected to plant a flag and set the tone.

Whether they are ready to do that is another matter.

Carrick’s selection puzzle

Carrick’s plans are already being shaped by injuries. Matthijs de Ligt is still out with a lower back problem, while Manuel Ugarte’s knee issue threatens to wipe out much of his season. Tom Heaton is also unavailable.

Mason Mount is a doubt after a foot injury in the 1–1 pre-season draw with PSG, and will face a late fitness test. Benjamin Seško has rejoined full training after a shin problem, but his chances of featuring from the start remain slim.

The reshaped midfield will be under immediate scrutiny. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both in line for competitive debuts at the base of a new-look engine room. Santos, a £50m signing from Chelsea, did everything asked of him in pre-season, featuring in all six friendlies and playing his way into contention for a starting spot. Tielemans arrived later after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, yet still banked 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan.

If Carrick wants early control of the contest, that pair will be central to it.

New faces, familiar pressure

At the back, Ayden Heaven is set to partner Harry Maguire in central defence. Lisandro Martínez managed only around half an hour of pre-season football and is expected to be named among the substitutes, where he could be joined by Kobbie Mainoo. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw should continue in the full-back roles, offering width and a route into Hull’s half if United dominate the ball as expected.

Up front, the pecking order has shifted. Bryan Mbeumo is poised to lead the line after an impressive pre-season, with Seško’s fitness issues opening the door for the Cameroon international to stake an early claim. Out wide, Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha are set to flank captain Bruno Fernandes, who will operate in his familiar number ten role and remain the creative heartbeat of the side.

Behind them, Senne Lammens continues in goal, tasked with bringing calm to a back line that has changed shape and personnel.

Carrick is likely to stick with his preferred 4-2-3-1, built around that new midfield axis and Fernandes’ freedom between the lines.
