Manchester United’s summer rebuild is not just about the midfield jigsaw or the hunt for a left-back. Quietly, almost under the radar, the club is ripping up and rewriting its goalkeeping department.

Vitek set for permanent Middlesbrough move

Radek Vitek is closing in on a permanent transfer to Middlesbrough, a deal that underlines how decisive United are prepared to be with their fringe players.

The 20-year-old Czech goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Bristol City and now wants what every young keeper craves: games, not promises. Middlesbrough are ready to offer that.

Journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Boro are “close to signing” Vitek from United, while talkSPORT echoed that the Championship side are “closing in on the permanent signing” of the goalkeeper.

No fee has been confirmed, but a previous report from the Daily Mail suggested United would look for around £10m to part with Vitek this summer. For a player yet to make a competitive first-team appearance at Old Trafford, that would represent smart business and a clear vote of confidence in his potential from Middlesbrough.

United, meanwhile, bank a fee, trim the squad, and continue to clear the decks for a new era in goal.

Bayindir to Celta Vigo: Romano’s ‘here we go’

If Vitek’s move is about a young keeper stepping out of the shadows, Altay Bayindir’s next chapter is about salvaging a stalled Old Trafford career.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Wednesday morning that Celta Vigo have reached an agreement with United to sign Bayindir on loan, his trademark “here we go” attached to the deal.

Celta will take the Turkish international on a season-long loan with a €4m buy option. That figure could change depending on appearances, a classic performance-related structure that gives the Spanish club flexibility and United a potential future sale if Bayindir finally gets the consistent minutes he never found in Manchester.

Bayindir has been authorised to travel for his medical and to finalise the contract with Celta Vigo. For a player who arrived with intrigue but never seriously threatened the No 1 spot, it is a necessary reset.

United’s new goalkeeping hierarchy

All of this movement leaves United with a very different look between the posts heading into the new campaign.

The plan is clear: Senne Lammens will start the season as first-choice goalkeeper. New signing Karl Darlow arrives as the experienced deputy, a steady pair of hands and a reliable presence in the dressing room. Tom Heaton remains in reserve, the veteran safety net and mentor.

Two out, a new structure in place, and space created on the wage bill and in the training ground dressing room.

And this is only one strand of United’s wider squad surgery. The club still want another midfielder to complete their overhaul in the middle of the pitch. A left-back is on the agenda. Any late move for a left-winger or a striker will depend on what happens with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee was recently listed by The Athletic among six players who could leave before the window closes, alongside Vitek, Altay Bayindir, Harry Amass, Toby Collyer and Ethan Wheatley. Two of that group are now on their way.
