Manchester United Pursues Barcelona's Alejandro Balde for Left-Back Position
Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as they hunt for a new left-back, with the La Liga champions suddenly facing a decision over one of their brightest academy products.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days to explore whether a move away from Barcelona is realistic and on what terms a deal could be done. The approach comes with United viewing the position as their “next priority” after wrapping up a deal for Carlos Baleba.
Balde’s situation at Barcelona has shifted quickly. Once seen as the undisputed long-term option on the left, the 21-year-old is coming off a difficult, injury-hit 2025/26 campaign. As he worked his way back, João Cancelo forced his way to the front of the queue.
Hansi Flick leaned heavily on Cancelo in the second half of last season, and the Portuguese full-back has now completed a permanent return to the club. That leaves Balde staring at the prospect of starting the new season as second choice, a sharp contrast to his rapid rise only a year earlier.
That change in hierarchy has inevitably drawn outside interest. United, searching for a reliable, long-term answer on the left side of their defence, have moved early to gauge whether Barcelona might be willing to cash in at the right price.
For now, there is a major obstacle: Balde himself. Despite the uncertainty over his role, Romano notes that the defender remains happy at Barcelona and content at Spotify Camp Nou. He is not agitating for a move, and there is no indication yet of a formal bid from Old Trafford.
So the lines are open, but nothing more. United are asking the question. Barcelona know they have a valuable asset, even after an interrupted season. And Balde, caught between ambition and loyalty, must decide how long he is prepared to wait behind Cancelo.
