With their search for a new left-back growing more urgent, United have sounded out the super-agent about the FC Barcelona defender’s situation, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Premier League club have been scouring the market, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall among the names on their list, but that door has effectively been slammed shut by the Magpies.

So the gaze has shifted. And it has landed on Barcelona’s 22-year-old La Masia product.

Balde’s stance: Barcelona or nothing

There is one major obstacle to any Old Trafford move: Alejandro Balde himself.

As Romano reports, the left-back has no intention of leaving Barcelona in this transfer window. He is settled at his boyhood club, committed to fighting for his place even as competition intensifies on his flank following the permanent signing of Joao Cancelo by the La Liga champions.

For Balde, the equation is simple. He stays, unless Barcelona tell him otherwise.

The 22-year-old is not pushing for a move, is not flirting with the market, and is not treating United’s interest as leverage. His stance would only change if the club made it clear they wanted him to go. Until that moment, he sees his future in Blaugrana colours.

A tricky summer, a clear role

Balde’s pre-season has not been flawless. A back issue disrupted the early part of his summer, limiting his involvement and slowing his rhythm at a time when places are being contested and systems fine-tuned.

Once fit, he began to claw those minutes back. He started in the friendly against FC Basel and again in the Joan Gamper Trophy clash with Al-Ahly, building sharpness and reminding everyone why Barcelona tied him down long term.

His contract runs until 2028. That is not the profile of a player a club casually pushes out of the door.

With Cancelo only just completing his permanent move this week, Balde is expected to start against Elche this weekend. For all the noise around agents, phone calls and Premier League interest, his immediate reality is far more straightforward: perform, convince, and keep the shirt.
