Manchester City Pursue Adam Wharton but Crystal Palace Says No

Manchester City have tested Crystal Palace’s resolve over Adam Wharton – and been sent away with a firm “no”.

The Premier League champions, suddenly without midfield metronome Rodri after his £65m move to Barcelona, have started scouring Europe for a replacement. Wharton’s name was on their list. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, City made an enquiry, only to be told the 22-year-old is not for sale this summer.

No negotiation. No price. Just a closed door.

From £18m gamble to Palace cornerstone

It wasn’t long ago that eyebrows shot up when Palace paid an initial £18m to take a 19-year-old Wharton from Blackburn Rovers in early 2024. A Championship prospect, yes, but that fee carried real pressure.

He has blown it away.

Across the next two and a half years at Selhurst Park, Wharton grew into the heartbeat of the side. He is closing in on 100 appearances, has been capped by England, and played a central role in Palace’s Europa Conference League and FA Cup triumphs over the past two seasons. Those medals changed how people spoke about him. So did the way he ran big games.

Inevitably, the elite started circling. Manchester United were among the clubs linked, and the noise around him grew. Wharton, though, cut through the speculation with a calmness that belied his age.

“There are always rumours floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me,” he said last November. “My friends, my family, my brothers, everyone will message me and be like, ‘Is it true this club’s interested?’. I’m like, ‘Thanks for telling me because I didn’t know.’

“You must be doing something right for those sorts of clubs to be interested or wanting you, but until there’s something concrete and direct communication, I wouldn’t stress about it.”

That attitude has underpinned his rise. Ambitious, but not agitated.

A long game, with the Champions League in sight

His agent, James Featherstone, has been just as clear about the path ahead. There is a plan, but not a rush.

“We have a plan and it doesn’t have to be achieved yesterday, today, this minute or moment,” Featherstone said in December. “So he has his in-game, in-season goals and targets, development and everything else. He’s got to do his bit and the rest will look after itself in a very structured, calm and sensible way.

“We spoke about shooting for the stars. Let’s play for England. How do you get there? Personally I think to play for England you have to play Champions League, and to play Champions League you have to play in one of the top teams in one of the top leagues.”

Wharton has already ticked off the first part of that ambition with his England debut. The second remains out of reach for now. Palace will step into the Europa League this season, a landmark moment for the club, but if they cannot eventually bridge the gap to the Champions League, the pressure on them to cash in – and on Wharton to move – will only grow.

For this window, though, the message is uncompromising: not available.

City’s Rodri problem grows

That stance leaves City facing a huge hole at the base of their midfield. Rodri’s switch from the Etihad to Camp Nou has ended a seven-year spell in Manchester in which he became the side’s on-pitch compass, dictating tempo and shielding the defence with ruthless efficiency.

Replacing that is a nightmare assignment.

Wharton was one of several options under consideration, but City’s interest has been parked by Palace’s refusal to engage. The midfielder, who did not make Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer, will instead lead Palace into Europe as their standard-bearer.

City’s recruitment drive goes on. Enzo Maresca’s side are pushing to sign Lille wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi in the coming weeks as they reshape a squad that is suddenly without its most reliable anchor.

Rodri’s shadow will loom over every candidate they consider. The champions know they cannot clone what they have lost. The question now is whether they can find someone who can carry that responsibility – and whether, one day, that someone ends up being Adam Wharton.
