Manchester City Eyes Enzo Fernandez Amid Midfield Shake-Up

Manchester City are weighing up a blockbuster move for Enzo Fernandez as the Premier League champions brace themselves for a possible shake-up at the heart of their midfield.

According to sources, the Chelsea playmaker sits high on City’s list of options, with new manager Enzo Maresca a strong admirer of the Argentina international. The interest comes at a delicate moment for the club, with Rodri increasingly likely to leave before the window closes.

City test Chelsea’s resolve over Enzo

Chelsea are understood to be open to selling Fernandez if a suitable offer lands on the table, but only on their terms. The London club have previously put a £120million price tag on the 25-year-old and intend to hold that line.

City, for all their financial power, are not prepared to go that high. Not this summer. Not with other deals already in motion.

They have already committed £116m to bring Elliot Anderson into their midfield, a significant outlay that shapes what they can do next. The stance from the Etihad is clear: they will explore a deal for Fernandez, but they will not simply meet Chelsea’s full valuation.

That leaves a standoff. Chelsea want £120m. City want the player, but not at that price.

Bouaddi still the priority – for now

The Enzo pursuit runs alongside another major target: Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City have been working on a deal for the Lille midfielder for several months and he remains their first-choice option as the window enters its final stretch. Negotiations, though, are yet to hit the decisive phase, and no agreement has been reached with the French club.

Any move for Bouaddi is expected to cost around £100m. That figure alone makes it difficult for City to then drop a similar amount on Fernandez in the same window.

On paper, it looks like a straight choice. In reality, the situation could change quickly.

Two exits could change everything

The reason? City are not just at risk of losing Rodri.

Tijjani Reijnders is also being linked with a move away from the Etihad, and his future is now a live issue inside the club. As revealed elsewhere, the Dutch midfielder could be tempted to push for a transfer before the 1 September deadline if his role does not grow.

His frustration is understandable. Reijnders featured 50 times in all competitions last season, but only 19 of those appearances were Premier League starts. For a 28-year-old in his prime, that is not the profile of a guaranteed starter.

If both Rodri and Reijnders depart, City’s midfield would suddenly look thin. At that point, the numbers change. Two major sales would free up significant funds and, just as importantly, create the need for two high-level replacements.

That scenario would make a double move for Bouaddi and Fernandez far more realistic than it appears today.

For now, City juggle their options, Chelsea hold firm on their valuation, and Fernandez waits in the middle of a tug-of-war that could define the shape of two midfields – and perhaps the balance of power in the Premier League – for years to come.
